A question keyword is a search phrased as a question, such as “how much does teeth whitening cost” or “are dental implants worth it”. The free Question Keyword Generator works in two ways. It builds grammatical question keywords from up to 500 seed topics, and it finds the real questions inside your own keyword data, such as a Search Console or keyword tool export, then totals them by question word and volume.

Key takeaways

  • Question keywords show exactly what people want to know, which makes them ideal for headings, FAQ sections and guides.
  • Answering questions directly helps pages appear in featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes and AI answers.
  • Generated questions are ideas. The question finder shows the questions people really use, from your own data.
  • Group questions that share an answer onto one page, and answer each in 40 to 60 words beneath a question heading.

Why question keywords matter

People increasingly search in full questions. Voice search, People Also Ask boxes and AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity all encourage it. A question tells you the intent precisely: “how much does teeth whitening cost” is a price check, “is teeth whitening safe” is a worry to reassure, and “how long does teeth whitening last” is a value question. Pages that answer these clearly earn clicks from searchers and passages that AI answers can quote.

Questions also give a page its structure. Each important question can become an H2 heading with a direct answer underneath, and smaller ones can go into an FAQ section. Our guide to FAQ page SEO explains when that helps and when it adds clutter.

Mode 1: generate question keywords from seeds

Enter one topic per line and choose the question types. The generator builds questions from patterns that apply to most services and products, and it adjusts the grammar for plurals: “what are dental implants” and “how do dental implants work”, but “what is seo” and “how does seo work”. It also strips commercial words from a seed before building questions, so “best seo tools” becomes questions about “seo tools” rather than “what is best seo tools”.

Question typeExamples for “teeth whitening”
Whatwhat is teeth whitening, what to expect from teeth whitening
Howhow does teeth whitening work, how much does teeth whitening cost
Whywhy is teeth whitening so expensive, why choose teeth whitening
When and wherewhen do you need teeth whitening, where to get teeth whitening
Who and whichwho offers teeth whitening, which type of teeth whitening is right for me
Is, are, can, doesis teeth whitening worth it, does teeth whitening really work
Comparisonwhat are the alternatives to teeth whitening (off by default)

Mode 2: find the real questions in your data

Generated questions are a starting point, but the most valuable questions are the ones people already search. Paste a Google Search Console Queries export or any keyword tool export with a header row, or upload the CSV. The finder reads up to 100,000 rows and keeps only the keywords that start with a question word (what, how, why, when, where, who, which, can, is, are, do, does, should, will and more) or end with a question mark. It then groups them by question word and totals their volume or impressions, so you can see which kinds of questions bring the most demand.

To export from Search Console, open the Performance report, choose a date range of at least three months, open the Queries tab and export. You can also filter for questions directly in Search Console with a regular expression; our guide to Search Console regex filters includes a question filter.

How to use the Question Keyword Generator

  1. In the first tool, enter your topics, one per line, using the noun form such as “keyword research” rather than “research keywords.
  2. Untick any question types you do not need, and press Generate questions. Copy each topic’s list or download the CSV.
  3. In the second tool, paste or upload your keyword export and press Find questions.
  4. Read the table by question word to see where demand sits, then sort through the questions list, which is ordered by volume or impressions.
  5. Download the CSV and mark which questions each page should answer.

Example output

In the first tool, the Load example button generates 93 question ideas for “teeth whitening”, “dental implants” and “local seo” across eight question types. In the second tool, the example reads a 13-row Search Console export and finds 9 questions, 69% of the list. “How” questions lead with 3,000 impressions across two queries, “how much does teeth whitening cost” and “how long does teeth whitening last”. “Is teeth whitening safe” follows with 1,400. Queries such as “teeth whitening near me” and “teeth whitening vs veneers” are correctly left out because they are not questions.

Turning questions into content

  1. Group questions by answer. “How much does teeth whitening cost” and “teeth whitening price in Karachi” share an answer and belong on one page. The Keyword Grouper and Topic Cluster Planner help here.
  2. Make big questions into headings. Use the question as the H2 and answer it in the first sentence beneath.
  3. Keep answers quotable. About 40 to 60 words works for most answers. Check them with the Answer Snippet Length Checker.
  4. Put the rest in an FAQ section. The FAQ Generator for AI Search builds the HTML and FAQPage schema.
  5. Plan the page. Turn the main question and its related ones into an outline with the Content Brief Generator.

Questions are also how pages win featured snippets, and in the age of zero-click search a clear answer can earn visibility even when the searcher does not click.

Limits to know about

The generator uses templates, so some questions will not suit your topic and many will have no measurable search volume. The finder only sees the keywords in your file. Search Console hides some rare queries for privacy, and keyword tools only list phrases they track, so neither shows every question people ask. Questions written without a question word, such as “teeth whitening safe”, are not detected unless they end with a question mark.

Questions about the Question Keyword Generator

How do I find questions people ask about a topic?

Look at People Also Ask boxes and autocomplete in Google, export your Search Console queries and run them through the question finder, and note the questions customers ask you directly. Those three sources show real demand.

Are question keywords good for SEO?

Yes. They reveal clear intent, often have less competition than broad terms, and suit the direct answers that featured snippets, People Also Ask and AI assistants use.

Can I find questions in a Search Console export?

Yes. Export the Queries table from the Performance report and paste or upload it. The tool reads the Query and Impressions columns and lists every question with its impressions.

How many seeds can I enter?

Up to 500 seed topics in the generator, and up to 100,000 rows in the question finder. The page shows the first 40 seeds and the top 1,000 questions; the CSV exports include everything.

Should every question get its own page?

No. Give a page to big questions with their own demand and intent, and answer smaller related questions as sections or FAQs on that page.

Does the tool store my data?

No. Both tools run in your browser, and nothing you paste or upload is sent to my server or saved.

If you would like your pages planned around the questions your customers actually ask, my on-page optimisation service covers keyword mapping and content structure, and you can ask for a free audit through the contact page. You can also browse the other free keyword research tools.
