The Answer Snippet Length Checker measures the answer directly under every heading on a page and tells you whether it falls within the 40 to 60 word range that suits featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes and AI answers. It flags answers that are too short or too long, answers that start with a pronoun, and answers that never repeat the question’s key term, and it suggests where to trim. Check one page, 50 pasted pages or 20 live URLs at once.

Key takeaways

  • A 40 to 60 word paragraph directly under a question heading is long enough to answer and short enough to be quoted whole.
  • The range is a widely used guide, not a rule published by Google or OpenAI. Some questions need a list, a table or more words.
  • The first sentence matters most. Keep it under about 30 words and make it the direct answer.
  • Lists work best with 3 to 8 items. Search features usually show around 8.
  • Bulk mode scores every page by the share of its answers that are in range.

Why answer length matters

Featured snippets, People Also Ask answers and AI-written answers all lift a short passage from a page and show it on its own. When the passage under a heading is a single word such as “It depends”, there is nothing useful to lift. When it is a 120-word paragraph, the system has to cut it, and the cut may lose the point. A self-contained answer of roughly two or three sentences is the easiest unit to quote accurately.

Industry studies of featured snippets have found that paragraph snippets are typically around 40 to 50 words long, which is where the common 40 to 60 word guide comes from. AI answer engines such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews also work at the passage level, which our guide to passage indexing explains. The checker applies that guide consistently across every heading so you can spot weak answers quickly.

What the checker looks at

CheckTargetWhat it means
Answer length40 to 60 words (you can change this)The first paragraph under the heading
First sentenceUnder about 30 wordsThe direct answer should come first and be short
Pronoun startNoneAnswers starting with It, This or They do not stand alone
Key termRepeated from the headingThe answer should name what it is answering
List answers3 to 8 itemsShort lists are thin; long lists get cut off
Missing answerAny textA heading followed directly by another heading

Each heading gets a status of Good, Check or Fix. Long answers include a trimmed version that ends on a full sentence within your maximum, when one exists.

How to use the Answer Snippet Length Checker

  1. Paste content as plain text, Markdown or HTML. In plain text, start headings with ## so the tool can find them. A short line ending in a question mark also counts as a heading.
  2. For bulk checks, separate pages with a line containing only ===, upload several files, or enter up to 20 URLs, one per line.
  3. Adjust the minimum and maximum if you work to a different range, and tick “Only check question headings” to skip sections such as “Our services”.
  4. Press Check answers. Read the totals, then the table for each page.
  5. Rewrite the answers marked Fix first, then Check, and run the page again.
  6. Download the CSV to share the list of answers to fix with a writer.

Example output

The Load example button checks a short teeth whitening guide with four headings. “What is teeth whitening?” has a 46-word answer that names the subject, so it is marked Good. “How long does it last?” is answered with two words, “It depends”, and is marked Fix: it is too short, starts with a pronoun and does not repeat the key term. The cost answer is a single 77-word sentence that never says “cost” or names Karachi, so it is marked Check. The steps section is a four-item list and is marked Good. Two of four answers are in range.

How to write a strong 40 to 60 word answer

  1. Answer in the first sentence. “Teeth whitening results usually last 6 to 24 months” beats “There are many factors to consider”.
  2. Repeat the subject. Name it instead of writing “it”, so the answer still makes sense when quoted alone.
  3. Add one specific detail. A number, a condition or a named example turns a vague answer into a useful one.
  4. Stop, then expand below. Put the short answer first and the detail, exceptions and evidence in the paragraphs that follow.
  5. Use a list when the answer is a list. Steps, types and options read better as 3 to 8 bullets with a one-sentence lead-in.

Where the 40 to 60 word rule does not apply

Not every heading needs a snippet-length answer. Comparison sections are often clearer as a table. Step-by-step instructions belong in a numbered list. Legal, medical and financial topics may need careful caveats that take more words, and cutting them to hit a number would make the page less accurate. Use the checker on the headings that answer a direct question, and use your judgement elsewhere. The tool’s question-only option exists for exactly this reason.

Using it with other AI search tools

The checker is one step in a wider process. Find the questions to answer with the FAQ Generator for AI Search and the Prompt-to-Query Mapper. Plan the page with the Content Brief Generator. After writing, check answer length here, then preview how your title and description will look with the SERP Snippet Preview. Our guides to optimising for featured snippets, winning snippets and AI answers and AI Overviews go deeper.

Limits to know about

The checker measures the first paragraph or list under each heading. It cannot tell whether the answer is correct or whether Google will choose it, and it does not see the live search results. Fetched pages are read from their main content area, so some themes that place FAQs in tabs or accordions built with scripts may need to be pasted as HTML instead.

Questions about the Answer Snippet Length Checker

How long should a featured snippet answer be?

A paragraph answer of about 40 to 60 words works well for most questions. It is long enough to answer completely and short enough for Google to show in full. Lists work best with three to eight items.

Is the 40 to 60 word range an official Google rule?

No. Google has not published a word limit for featured snippets or AI Overviews. The range comes from studies of the snippets Google shows, so treat it as a practical guide.

Does answer length matter for ChatGPT and AI Overviews?

AI answer engines quote short passages, so a direct, self-contained answer of two or three sentences is easier to use than a long paragraph. Length alone does not earn a citation, but it removes a barrier.

Can I check every page on my site at once?

You can check up to 20 URLs or 50 pasted pages per run. For larger sites, run the pages in batches and combine the CSV exports in a spreadsheet.

Why is a short answer marked Fix?

An answer under half your minimum, such as “It depends”, gives readers and search systems nothing specific to use. Add the key fact or condition that completes it.

Does the tool store my content?

No. Pasted text and files are checked in your browser. URLs are fetched once by our server and not stored.
