An AI citation readiness score measures how easy a piece of content is for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews to quote. The free AI Citation Readiness Scorer rates a draft or live page out of 100 on eight factors: an answer-first opening, clear definitions, named entities, specific facts, sources, self-contained passages, structure and plain wording. It also shows the passages most likely to be quoted. You can score up to 50 drafts or 20 URLs in one run.

Key takeaways
- AI assistants quote short passages, so the score looks at paragraphs and sentences, not just the page as a whole.
- The biggest gains usually come from the opening paragraph: state the answer in the first 20 to 70 words.
- Paragraphs that start with “It” or “This” lose meaning when quoted alone. Name the subject instead.
- Bulk mode ranks many pages from weakest to strongest, so you know which to rewrite first.
- The score measures text. It cannot promise that any AI system will cite your page.
What the AI Citation Readiness Scorer does
When someone asks ChatGPT search or Google AI Mode a question, the system reads several web pages, picks the passages that answer the question best and writes a response that links to its sources. A passage is more likely to be picked when it answers directly, names specific things, includes a fact worth repeating and makes sense without the paragraphs around it.
The scorer checks your text for those traits. It splits the content into headings, paragraphs and list items, then scores each factor separately so you can see exactly where points are lost. It works on plain text, Markdown and HTML, and on live pages fetched by URL. It is the measurement step in an AI search optimisation workflow.
How the score is calculated
| Factor | Points | What earns the points |
|---|---|---|
| Answer-first opening | 20 | First paragraph of 20 to 70 words that defines the subject and names the topic |
| Clear definitions | 10 | Sentences in “X is a…” form, which AI answers quote directly |
| Named entities | 15 | Distinct people, places, brands and organisations per 1,000 words |
| Numbers and specifics | 15 | Prices, dates, durations and measurements per 100 words |
| Sources and attribution | 10 | Links and phrases such as “according to” or “published by” |
| Self-contained passages | 15 | Few pronoun-led paragraphs and no paragraphs over 120 words |
| Headings and lists | 10 | Headings, question headings and list items |
| Plain wording | 5 | No stock phrases and an average sentence under 26 words |
A score of 80 or more is strong, 60 to 79 is good with gaps, 40 to 59 needs work and under 40 is weak. Treat each factor as a prompt to look again, not a rule to follow blindly.
How to use the scorer
- Optionally enter the main topic or question, such as “teeth whitening”. The tool checks that your opening names it.
- Paste a draft as plain text, Markdown or HTML. In plain text, start heading lines with #.
- For bulk scoring, put a line containing only === between drafts, upload several files, or enter up to 20 page addresses.
- Press Score content. A single page shows its full breakdown. Several pages show a table sorted from weakest to strongest, with the weakest factor for each.
- Open any page’s detail view, work through “What to fix first”, then score again.
- Download the CSV to keep a record of scores before and after your edits.
Example output
The Load example button scores a short teeth whitening page. It opens with a 40-word definition that names the topic and gives a time range, so the opening earns full marks. Prices in Pakistani rupees, a year, durations and the American Dental Association give it full marks for specifics and entities. It loses points for one pronoun-led paragraph (“It is very popular these days…”), two stock phrases and no links. The total is 83 out of 100, and the tool lists three quotable passages, led by the definition.
How to raise a low score
- Rewrite the opening. One or two sentences that say what the subject is and the key fact, then who it is for. Our Answer-First Content Checker focuses on this alone.
- Add definitions. Wherever a section introduces a term, define it in one plain sentence.
- Name things. Replace “a leading body” with the organisation’s name, “a big city” with the city. Use the Entity Extractor to compare your entities with pages that already rank.
- Add specifics with sources. A price range with a date and where it came from is far more quotable than “prices vary”. See original research content for ways to publish your own data.
- Fix pronoun openers. Start each paragraph with the subject so it stands alone when quoted.
- Split long paragraphs and check each answer length with the Answer Snippet Length Checker.
Why citation readiness matters for SEO and AI search
Citations in AI answers are a growing source of visits and brand exposure, and the same qualities that earn them also help in normal search. Clear definitions are what featured snippets are built from. Named entities support entity-based SEO and help Google connect your page to its Knowledge Graph. Self-contained passages suit passage ranking. Specific, sourced facts are what readers trust.
Google states in its guidance on AI features and your website that the same SEO fundamentals apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. No published formula exists for being cited by ChatGPT. Writing that is clear, specific and honest about its sources is the most reliable approach for both.
Scoring many pages at once
Bulk scoring is most useful in three situations. First, before a content refresh: score every page in a cluster and rewrite the lowest scorers first. Second, against competitors: enter your page and the three pages that rank above it, then compare scores and weakest factors. Third, for writers and agencies: score a batch of drafts before they go live and send each writer the factor they lost most points on. The CSV export lists every factor score per page, so you can sort and filter in a spreadsheet and track progress over time.
Limits to know about
The scorer measures structure and specificity in text. It does not measure authority, backlinks, rankings, accuracy or whether a page is indexed, and it cannot see the private signals AI systems use. Entities are found from capital letters, so a sentence full of brand names will score highly even if it says little. Fetched pages are read from their main content area, so menus and footers are left out, but unusual themes may need a manual check. Before relying on a page for AI search, confirm crawler access with the AI Crawler Access Checker and test the live page with the AI Search Readiness Checker.
Questions about the AI Citation Readiness Scorer
What is a good AI citation readiness score?
A score of 80 or more out of 100 means the text has a direct opening, specific facts, named entities and self-contained passages. Most well-edited guides land between 65 and 85.
Will a high score get my page cited by ChatGPT?
No score can guarantee a citation. ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Google choose sources with their own systems. A high score means the text is easy to quote if the page is crawled, indexed and trusted.
How is this different from the Answer-First Content Checker?
The Answer-First Content Checker focuses on structure and readability. The AI Citation Readiness Scorer adds entities, specific facts, definitions, sources and passage independence, gives a score out of 100 and lists the most quotable passages.
Can I score a competitor’s page?
Yes. Enter its URL along with your own. Our server fetches each public page once, and the tool scores the main content so you can compare factor by factor.
Why does my score drop for paragraphs that start with “It”?
AI answers often quote one paragraph on its own. If that paragraph starts with “It” or “This”, the reader cannot tell what it refers to, so the passage is less useful as a source.
Does the scorer store my content?
No. Pasted text and uploaded files are scored in your browser. URLs are fetched once by our server and not stored.
