To create FAQ schema, paste your questions and answers into the free FAQ Schema Generator above, with each question on its own line ending in a question mark and the answer below it. You can also paste a page’s HTML, and it finds the questions in headings, accordions and definition lists for you. It builds valid FAQPage JSON-LD and a matching HTML accordion. It drops questions that have no answer, removes duplicates and keeps only the HTML tags Google allows in answers. For bulk work, separate up to 50 pages with a line of ===.

Key takeaways
- FAQPage markup describes a list of questions, each with one accepted answer, that are visible on the page.
- Since August 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health websites, so most sites will not get the expandable result in Google.
- The markup is still valid and useful: it states your answers clearly for other search engines and AI systems, and it costs nothing to keep.
- Only mark up questions and answers that visitors can see, and write each answer as a complete, direct reply.
What FAQ schema is
FAQ schema is structured data using the schema.org FAQPage type. It wraps each question in a Question item and its answer in an Answer item, so machines can read the pairs without guessing from your layout. For years it gave many sites an expandable list under their search result. Google narrowed that in August 2023, but the reasons to write good FAQs did not change: they answer real questions, they suit voice and AI answers, and they often capture long-tail searches. My guide to FAQ page SEO covers when an FAQ section helps and how to write one.
This generator is built for the common real-world job: you already have the questions and answers, in a document or on a page, and you need clean markup fast, often for many pages. For a form-based builder that covers other schema types too, use the schema markup generator.
How to use the FAQ Schema Generator
- Paste your FAQ. Put each question on its own line ending with “?”, and the answer on the lines below. “Q:” and “A:” prefixes also work, and numbered questions are fine.
- Or paste HTML. Questions in h2 to h5 headings, in
<summary>elements of an accordion, in<dt>terms or in bold paragraphs ending with “?” are detected, and the content until the next question becomes the answer. - Add the page URL if you want an
@idthat ties the FAQ to the page. - For several pages, separate them with a line of
===, and start each block withURL: https://...if you like. - Copy the JSON-LD into the page (head or body), and use the accordion HTML if the answers are not already visible.
What the generator checks
| Check | What happens |
|---|---|
| Question with no answer | Left out of the schema and flagged as an error |
| Duplicate question | Only the first copy is kept, the repeat is flagged |
| Very short answer | Noted: under five words rarely answers fully |
| Long question | Noted when over 160 characters |
| HTML in answers | Only tags Google supports are kept: headings, p, br, ol, ul, li, a, b, strong, i, em, div. Images, scripts, buttons and forms are removed |
| Escaping | Text is escaped and any closing script tag inside answers is neutralised, so the block cannot break the page |
A worked example
The example is an FAQ for a teeth whitening page, pasted as plain text with five questions. The generator found five questions and put three in the schema:
- “How long does teeth whitening last?”, “Is teeth whitening safe?” and “How much does teeth whitening cost in Karachi?” were included, each with its answer as a paragraph.
- “Does whitening work on crowns or veneers?” had no answer below it, so it was left out and flagged.
- “How long does teeth whitening last?” appeared a second time, so the duplicate was dropped and flagged.
The JSON-LD starts with "@type": "FAQPage" and lists each question as a Question with an acceptedAnswer. The accordion HTML uses <details> and <summary>, which work without JavaScript and keep the answers in the page for search engines.
Writing FAQs that are worth marking up
- Use real questions. Take them from Search Console queries, sales calls and reviews. The question keyword generator and the Search Console CSV analyzer both surface them.
- Answer in the first sentence. Then add the detail. That is the format AI answers quote, and the answer-first content checker tests it.
- Write each page its own FAQ. Copying the same questions across every location page creates duplicate content.
- Keep markup and page in step. If you edit an answer on the page, regenerate the schema.
- Check the result. Run the page through the structured data checker or the JSON-LD validator.
If you want questions written for AI search in the first place, the FAQ generator for AI search drafts them from your topic and content.
FAQ schema and AI answers
Even without rich results in Google, clear question and answer pairs help in other places. AI assistants and answer engines look for direct answers they can quote, and an FAQ with a short, complete reply to each question is easy for them to use. Bing and other search engines still read FAQPage markup. The markup also makes the relationship between a question and its answer explicit, rather than leaving a machine to infer it from your layout. That makes FAQs one of the simplest ways to state facts about your business, prices and process in a form that can be cited. To check how ready a page is for AI answers more broadly, run it through the AI citation readiness scorer.
Limits
The generator does not write answers for you; it structures the ones you give it. HTML detection follows common patterns, so unusual page builders may need the text pasted instead. It does not check whether the FAQ is visible on your live page or whether a plugin already adds FAQ markup, which would create duplicates; the structured data checker finds those. Google decides whether to show any rich result, and for most sites it will not show FAQ results. Everything runs in your browser.
Questions about the FAQ Schema Generator
Is FAQ schema still worth adding?
It no longer produces rich results for most websites in Google, but it is valid, harmless and still read by other search engines and AI systems. If your FAQ content is genuinely useful, adding the markup is a small, low-risk step.
Where do I put the FAQ JSON-LD?
Anywhere in the page HTML, in the head or the body. In WordPress, a header and footer code plugin or your SEO plugin’s schema settings work, as long as only one FAQPage block describes the page.
Can answers contain links and lists?
Yes. Google allows links, lists, paragraphs, line breaks, headings and bold or italic text in FAQ answers. The generator keeps those and removes everything else.
Do the questions have to be visible on the page?
Yes. Google’s guidelines require the questions and answers in FAQ markup to be visible to users. Hidden FAQ markup can lead to a manual action.
Can I create FAQ schema for many pages at once?
Yes. Separate the pages with a line containing only ===, and add a line starting with “URL:” to each block to label it. Each block gets its own JSON-LD and accordion.
