What are llms.txt and llms-full.txt?

The llms.txt proposal was published by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI in September 2024 at llmstxt.org. It suggests a Markdown file at the root of a site, at /llms.txt, with the site’s name, a one-line summary and a list of links to the pages that matter most. llms-full.txt grew out of the same idea and has been adopted by many documentation platforms and software companies. Instead of links, it contains the full Markdown text of each page, one after another, each with its title and source URL. A developer or an AI coding assistant can load that single file and have the whole of a product’s documentation in context. For a business site, it can hold your service pages, pricing, policies and key guides.

How to use the llms-full.txt Generator

1. Enter your site or business name and a one-sentence summary of what you do, who you serve and where.
2. Add your pages. The fastest way is to paste up to 20 URLs, one per line. You can also upload saved HTML or Markdown files, or paste pages with a # title line and a URL: line at the top of each, separated by a line containing only ===.
3. Optionally enter where llms-full.txt will live, such as https://example.com/llms-full.txt, so the index can link to it.
4. Press Build llms-full.txt. Pages that could not be fetched are listed with the reason.
5. Check the Pages included table. A page marked thin may have content loaded by scripts that the server could not see; paste its HTML instead.
6. Download both files, review the Markdown, and upload them to the root folder of your website.

Example output

The Load example button builds a file for a dental clinic from two pasted pages. The teeth whitening page is HTML: its H1 is moved into the page title, the price list becomes a Markdown list, bold text stays bold, and the relative link to the aftercare guide becomes a full URL. The dental implants page is already Markdown, so its heading, bold text and two-row table pass through unchanged. The companion llms.txt lists both pages as links and adds a link to the full file.

Which pages to include

• Include: your home page, main service or product pages, pricing, location and contact details, policies such as returns or cancellations, and the guides that best explain your expertise.
• Leave out: thin tag and archive pages, outdated posts, duplicate pages, private or logged-in content, and anything you would not want quoted.
• Keep it current: rebuild the file when prices, services or policies change. An AI tool that reads stale prices does more harm than good.

Where to upload the files

Upload llms.txt and llms-full.txt to the root of your domain so they load at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt and https://yourdomain.com/llms-full.txt. On WordPress you can use a file manager plugin or your host’s file manager, or let an SEO plugin generate llms.txt and upload only the full file yourself. Do AI crawlers actually read llms-full.txt?

Honestly, the evidence is thin. The files are used by developer tools and some AI coding assistants that are pointed at them directly. Major AI search crawlers have not announced support, and many site owners report few or no requests for the files in their server logs. Getting cited in ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI features still depends on crawler access, indexing and clear content on your normal pages. Limits to know about

The generator fetches public pages only, up to 20 per run, and reads the HTML the server returns, so content added later by JavaScript may be missing. It converts the main content area it finds, which suits most WordPress, Shopify and documentation themes, but unusual layouts may include stray text. Images are left out. The token count is an estimate of characters divided by four. Always read the file before you publish it.
