An llms.txt file is a plain Markdown file at the root of a website that gives language models a short summary of the site and a curated list of its most useful pages. The free llms.txt Generator turns your site name, summary and key links into a correctly formatted file you can copy or download. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded or stored. If you also want one file that carries the full text of your key pages, use the llms-full.txt generator.

The proposal published at llmstxt.org describes the format: a heading with the site name, a short summary in a quote block, optional notes, and sections of links, with an Optional section for pages that can be skipped when space is tight.

How to use the llms.txt Generator

  1. Enter your site or business name.
  2. Write a summary of one or two sentences that says what the site is and who it helps.
  3. Add any extra notes a reader would need, such as the areas you serve.
  4. Fill in the link sections. Put one link on each line in the form Title | https://example.com/page/ | Short description. The description is optional.
  5. Check the file shown below the form, then copy it or download it as llms.txt.
  6. Upload the file to the root of your site so it loads at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt.

Choose links with care. The file works best as a short guide to your most useful pages, not a copy of your sitemap.

How to read the results

The output follows a fixed layout, and knowing what each part does helps you decide what to keep.

  • The first heading: a single line starting with # that names the site.
  • The quote line: your summary, starting with >. It is the part a reader sees first, so make it plain and specific.
  • Section headings: lines starting with ## that group your links, such as Key pages or Services.
  • Link lines: each one starts with a dash, then the title in square brackets, the address in round brackets and an optional description after a colon.
  • The Optional section: by the proposal’s convention, links here can be left out by a reader that needs a shorter version.

The Checks panel flags a missing name, a missing summary, duplicate links, lines without a full address and files with a very long list of links.

Common problems this finds

  • Relative links: a path such as /about/ is not enough. Every link needs the full address starting with https://.
  • Listing every page: a long list defeats the purpose. Pick the pages you would send a new visitor to.
  • A vague summary: “We provide solutions” says nothing. Name the service, the audience and the place.
  • Duplicate links: the same address listed twice adds length and no value.
  • Wrong location: the file only counts when it sits at the root of the domain, not in a subfolder.

Worked example (illustrative)

Imagine a dental clinic in Karachi. Its name goes in the first field and its summary reads: a family dental practice offering check-ups, whitening and braces. Under Key pages it lists the treatments page, the pricing page and the contact page, each with a short description. Under Optional it lists the blog.

The generator produces a file of about a dozen lines. The clinic uploads it to its site root and opens /llms.txt in a browser to confirm it loads as plain text. If the owner later adds a new treatment page, they add one line and upload the file again.

This is a made-up example to show the process. Your own file should describe what your site really offers.

Why it matters

A short, curated summary can help a language model or an AI tool understand what a site is about without wading through navigation and scripts. It also makes you decide which pages best represent the business, which is a useful exercise in itself.

It is worth being clear about the benefit. llms.txt is a proposal, not an established standard, and the major AI providers have not all said that they read it. Publishing one costs little and does no harm, but it should not replace the basics: crawlable pages, clear headings and useful content.

Limits to know about

The generator builds the text you describe. It does not crawl your site, so it cannot find your best pages for you or check that your links work. Use the Broken Link Checker for that.

It also cannot make an AI system read the file. To see whether a page can be crawled by AI search systems at all, run the AI Search Readiness Checker.

Questions about the llms.txt Generator

Does ChatGPT read llms.txt?

OpenAI has not said that ChatGPT needs the file, and its crawler documentation is built around robots.txt. Treat llms.txt as an optional extra that some tools may use.

What is the difference between llms.txt and robots.txt?

robots.txt tells crawlers which parts of a site they may fetch. llms.txt is a guide that points readers to your most useful pages. They do different jobs, and one does not replace the other. The Robots.txt Generator covers the first.

Where do I put the llms.txt file?

At the root of your domain, so that it loads at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt. On WordPress you can upload it through your host’s file manager, or use your SEO plugin if it offers the feature.

How many links should I include?

Keep it to the pages that best explain your business, often between 5 and 30. The tool warns when the list passes 40 links.

Does the generator store what I type?

No. It runs in your browser, so what you enter is not sent to my server. Copy or download the file before you close the page, because nothing is saved for later.

If you would like help deciding which pages to feature, or a full review of how AI search systems see your site, my technical SEO services cover that work, and you can ask for a free audit through the contact page. You can also browse the rest of the free technical SEO tools.
