AEO - Answer Engine Optimization

What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? A Practical Guide and AEO Experts in Pakistan

Short answer: Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your content easy for search engines, voice assistants and AI tools to pick up and present as a direct answer, for example in Google’s AI Overviews, featured snippets, ChatGPT or Perplexity. It builds on SEO rather than replacing it: the page still has to be crawlable and indexed, but it is written as clear, self-contained answers backed by real expertise.

This guide is for business owners, marketers and writers in Pakistan and elsewhere who keep hearing about AEO and want to know what it really involves. You will learn what counts as an answer engine, how AEO differs from SEO and GEO, the page-level changes that make content quotable, how to measure it, and how to judge anyone offering AEO services, including me.

What is answer engine optimization?

An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with an answer rather than just a list of links. Google’s featured snippets were the first big example. Today the term covers Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, voice assistants such as Google Assistant, Siri and Alexa, and AI chat tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot.

AEO is the work of making your content the source those systems choose. In practice that means three things: the content must be reachable (crawlable, indexed, not blocked), it must contain clear answers that can be lifted without losing meaning, and it must come from a source the system has reason to trust.

Why it matters now

Answers on the results page change user behaviour. In a Pew Research Center study of 900 US adults’ browsing in March 2025, people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits to pages with an AI summary, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary in just 1% of visits. If fewer people click, being the cited source inside the answer becomes part of being visible. My guide to zero-click searches covers the wider trend.

AEO vs SEO vs GEO

These labels overlap heavily, and you will see agencies sell them as separate services. Here is how I separate them:

SEOAEOGEO
Main goalRank pages in search results and earn clicksBe the direct answer or a cited source for a questionBe cited or mentioned in AI-generated responses

The important point: AEO depends on SEO. Google’s documentation on AI features and your website says there are no additional requirements or special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode; a page must simply be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and normal SEO best practice applies. For the AI-chat side, see my guide to generative engine optimisation.

How answer engines choose what to quote

  • Featured snippets: Google’s featured snippet documentation says its systems decide whether a page would make a good featured snippet, and when asked how to mark a page as one, its answer is “You can’t.” There is no markup for it; only clear content. My guide on optimising for featured snippets goes into formats.
  • AI Overviews and AI Mode: Google says these may issue multiple related searches across subtopics (query fan-out) and then link to supporting pages. Pages that answer the sub-questions clearly have more chances to be used.
  • Voice assistants: usually read out one short answer, often drawn from a featured snippet or a local listing, so concise answers and an accurate Google Business Profile matter. See voice search optimisation.
  • AI chat tools: retrieve web pages through their own search or index, then summarise. Being crawlable by their bots and being mentioned by other trusted sites both help.

How to optimise a page for answer engines

When I rework a page for AEO, I follow the same steps every time:

  1. Collect the real questions. Use “People also ask”, autocomplete, your sales calls, WhatsApp enquiries and Search Console queries that start with what, how, why, can or does.
  2. Put a direct answer first. Under each question-led heading, answer in the first one or two sentences (roughly 40 to 60 words), then add detail. The answer must make sense if lifted on its own.
  3. Use the right format for the question. Definitions as a short paragraph, processes as numbered steps, comparisons as a table.
  4. Show who is answering. A named author, relevant experience and cited sources. My guide to E-E-A-T on-page signals lists what to add.
  5. Add accurate structured data. Article, Organization, LocalBusiness, Product and similar schema markup helps machines understand the page, as long as it matches the visible text.
  6. Keep it crawlable. Important answers in the HTML, not hidden behind scripts or tabs that never load, and AI crawlers allowed if you want to be cited by them.
  7. Keep it current. Update facts, prices and dates. Answer engines prefer sources that are accurate today.

AEO page checklist

  • Indexed: the page is indexed in Google and not blocked by robots.txt or noindex.
  • Snippet allowed: no nosnippet or very low max-snippet setting on the page.
  • Question headings: main H2s or H3s are phrased the way people ask.
  • Answer first: each question is answered in the first one or two sentences beneath it.
  • Self-contained answers: no “as mentioned above”; each answer stands alone.
  • Right format: steps as lists, comparisons as tables, definitions as short paragraphs.
  • Named author: with a short bio showing relevant experience.
  • Sources cited: statistics and claims link to the original source.
  • Structured data: valid and matching the visible content.
  • Fresh: facts and dates checked in the last six to twelve months.
  • Entity clarity: your brand name, location and services stated consistently across the site and profiles.
  • AI crawler access decided: you have chosen which AI bots to allow in robots.txt.

Ticks are saved in your browser.

Worked example: rewriting an answer for AEO

Before: “At our clinic we have been serving patients for many years and we believe that every patient deserves the best care. Root canal treatment is one of the many services we offer and the cost can vary depending on several factors which our team will discuss with you.”

After: “Root canal treatment in Karachi usually costs more for molars than for front teeth, because molars have more canals and take longer. The final price depends on the tooth, whether a crown is needed and the number of visits. We confirm the exact cost after an X-ray at your first appointment.”

The rewrite answers the question in the first sentence, explains what changes the answer and says what happens next. It contains no invented prices, and it can be quoted on its own. On a real page I would add the clinic’s actual price range if the owner is willing to publish it, because that is what people are asking.

What changed in 2026: FAQ rich results are gone

Many older AEO guides tell you to add FAQPage schema to win FAQ rich results. That advice is out of date. Google’s Search Central documentation updates show that the FAQ rich result was deprecated on 8 May 2026, stopped appearing from 7 May 2026, and its documentation was removed on 15 June 2026. FAQ sections are still useful for readers and as clear question-and-answer passages that answer engines can quote; just do not expect a special result for the markup.

How to measure AEO

  • Featured snippets and AI Overviews: track which target questions show your page as the snippet or a cited link. Most rank trackers now record this.
  • AI referrals: in GA4, look for sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. My guide to AI referral traffic in GA4 shows the setup.
  • Mentions in AI answers: regularly ask the main AI tools the questions your customers ask and record whether you are mentioned or cited. See tracking brand visibility in AI assistants.
  • Business results: enquiries, calls and branded searches. Answer visibility that never leads to a customer is not worth much.

Common AEO mistakes I see

  • Writing 300 words of introduction before answering the question in the heading.
  • Adding an FAQ block of generic questions nobody asks, copied across every page.
  • Blocking all AI crawlers by default, then wondering why AI tools never cite the site.
  • Treating AEO as a separate project while the site has basic indexing problems.
  • Answers that rely on images or PDFs with no text version.
  • Making claims, prices or statistics that cannot be verified, which reduces trust.

Check your understanding

What does Google say you need to appear in AI Overviews?

  • Special AI Overview markup
  • An indexed page that is eligible to show with a snippet
  • A paid Search Console plan

Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimisations; normal SEO best practice applies.

Can you mark up a page so it becomes a featured snippet?

  • Yes, with FAQPage schema
  • Yes, with a meta tag
  • No, Google’s systems decide

Google’s documentation says you cannot mark a page as a featured snippet; clear content is what helps.

Which is the best AEO structure under a question heading?

  • A one or two sentence direct answer, then supporting detail
  • A long introduction, then the answer at the end
  • Only an image with the answer in it

Answer engines quote clear, self-contained passages. Put the answer first, in text.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. AEO is built on SEO. Google says pages need to be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear in its AI features, and AI chat tools still find pages through search indexes. AEO changes how you write and structure content, not the foundations.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO is about being the answer across answer engines, including featured snippets and voice. GEO focuses on generative AI tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity. The work overlaps almost completely; GEO puts more weight on brand mentions across the web.

Does schema markup help with AEO?

Accurate structured data helps search engines understand your page, which supports answer features. It is not a shortcut: Google ended FAQ rich results in 2026, and there is no markup that forces a featured snippet or AI citation.

How long does AEO take to show results?

Changes to well-indexed pages can show in featured snippets or AI Overviews within weeks of being recrawled. Mentions in AI chat tools usually take longer and are less predictable. Most businesses should judge it over three to six months.

Is AEO worth it for small businesses in Pakistan?

Yes, if customers ask questions before buying, such as prices, timings, comparisons or “how do I” questions. Answering those clearly on your site, plus keeping your Google Business Profile accurate, covers most of what AEO means for a small business.
