The viewport meta tag tells mobile browsers how wide to draw the page and how to scale it. The standard version is width=device-width with an initial scale of 1. It is not a direct ranking factor, but without it your page can look like a shrunken desktop site, which harms the mobile experience Google evaluates.
The standard code
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">Place it inside the head section of every page.
Why it matters for SEO
Google primarily uses the mobile version of a site for indexing. If a page lacks a viewport tag, phones may render it at desktop width, so text is tiny and tap targets are cramped. That poor experience can reduce engagement and can be flagged in mobile usability checks.

Mistakes to avoid
- Setting a fixed pixel width, which breaks on devices of different sizes.
- Disabling zoom with user-scalable=no, which hurts accessibility.
- Adding the tag to some templates but not others.
