Twitter card meta tags control how your links appear on X, formerly Twitter. The two common types are summary, which shows a small image beside the text, and summary_large_image, which shows a large image above it. If you omit the Twitter tags, the platform can fall back to your Open Graph tags.
The basic tags
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
<meta name="twitter:title" content="Page title">
<meta name="twitter:description" content="Short summary">
<meta name="twitter:image" content="https://example.com/image.jpg">Summary or large image?
Use summary_large_image for articles, guides and anything with a strong visual, because the larger preview takes more space in the feed. Use summary when the image is a logo or small square, where stretching it would look poor.

Do you need them if you have Open Graph?
Often only the twitter:card tag is worth adding, since other values can be inherited from Open Graph. Set the full set only if you want the X preview to differ from other platforms. Read which Open Graph tags you need first.
Image tips
- Use a full, public URL.
- Keep important content away from the edges, since cropping varies.
- Avoid tiny text on the image.
- Compress it so the preview loads quickly.

Frequently asked questions
Do Twitter cards affect SEO?
Not directly. They influence how appealing a shared link looks.
Why is my old image still showing?
Platforms cache previews. Changing the image URL often forces a refresh.
