A long-tail keyword is a longer, more specific search phrase, usually three words or more, such as “teeth whitening cost in Karachi” rather than “teeth whitening”. The free Long-Tail Keyword Expander turns up to 500 seed keywords into long-tail ideas by adding question, commercial, service, comparison, guide, local, audience and custom modifiers. It fixes the grammar for plural seeds, avoids doubled words, and exports every idea as a list or CSV.

Key takeaways
- Long-tail keywords are searched less often than broad terms, but they have clearer intent and usually face less competition.
- Modifiers tell you what the searcher wants: “cost” signals a price check, “near me” a local visit, “how to” a guide.
- The expander builds ideas from patterns. It does not show search volume, so check the ideas you like in a keyword tool or Search Console.
- Group the ideas that share an intent onto one page rather than writing a page for every variation.
What is a long-tail keyword?
The name comes from a chart of search demand. A few broad terms, the “head”, are searched very often. Behind them stretches a long tail of millions of specific phrases, each searched only a few times a month, which together make up most searches. A long-tail keyword is one of those specific phrases: it adds detail about what the person wants, where they are, who they are or what stage of a decision they have reached.
Long-tail keywords suit new and smaller sites because large competitors rarely build pages for each specific question. They also suit AI search, because the long, conversational questions people ask ChatGPT and Google AI Mode are long-tail by nature. Our guide to long-tail keywords in SEO covers examples and strategy in more depth.
Modifier types the expander uses
| Type | Examples for “dental implants” | Typical intent |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | what are dental implants, how much do dental implants cost | Informational |
| Commercial | best dental implants, affordable dental implants, dental implants reviews | Commercial |
| Service and product | dental implants packages, dental implants near me | Transactional and local |
| Business and B2B | seo agency, seo for small business (best for business services) | Commercial |
| Comparison | dental implants alternatives, types of dental implants | Commercial research |
| Guides and research | dental implants guide, dental implants mistakes to avoid | Informational |
| Health and personal care | are dental implants safe, dental implants recovery time | Informational (off by default) |
| Local | dental implants in Karachi, dental implants cost in Lahore | Local and transactional |
| Audience | dental implants for seniors | Depends on the audience |
You can also add your own prefixes and suffixes, such as “emergency” or “clinic”, to fit your industry.
How the expander keeps ideas accurate
Simple keyword expanders paste modifiers onto every seed, which produces broken phrases such as “what is best seo tools” or “website cost cost”. This tool reads each seed first. It separates the core phrase from any modifier the seed already has, so “best seo tools” is expanded from “seo tools” and still keeps useful combinations such as “best seo tools for beginners”. It detects plural seeds and changes the verb, so you get “what are dental implants” and “how do dental implants work”. It drops unfinished stems such as “teeth whitening vs” unless you ask for them, and removes duplicates across all your seeds.
How to use the Long-Tail Keyword Expander
- Enter your seed keywords, one per line, up to 500. A CSV export also works: only the first column is read.
- Optionally add locations, such as your cities or neighbourhoods, and audiences, such as “students” or “small business owners”. Entering them turns on those modifier types automatically.
- Add any custom prefixes or suffixes that suit your industry.
- Choose the modifier types. Turn off Business for consumer topics, and turn on Health for medical, beauty and fitness topics.
- Set the minimum length. Three words or more keeps only true long-tail ideas.
- Press Expand keywords, filter by type or seed, and download the plain list or the CSV.
Example output
The Load example button expands “teeth whitening” and “dental implants” with Karachi and Lahore as locations and Business turned off. It produces 86 long-tail ideas with an average length of 3.9 words. Because “dental implants” is plural, the questions read “what are dental implants” and “how do dental implants work”. The local group adds ten phrases per seed, such as “teeth whitening cost in Karachi”, “best teeth whitening in Lahore” and “teeth whitening near Karachi”.
What to do with your long-tail list
- Check demand. Paste the list into a keyword tool or Google Keyword Planner, or compare it with your Search Console queries. Delete ideas nobody searches.
- Check difficulty. Run the survivors through the Keyword Difficulty Estimator and sort by opportunity.
- Label intent. The Search Intent Classifier labels a whole list at once. Our guide to search intent segmentation explains how to split a list into page types.
- Group. Keywords that one page can answer belong together. Use the Keyword Grouper, then map each group to a page with the Topic Cluster Planner.
- Answer questions on the page. Question ideas make good H2 headings and FAQ entries. Turn them into a section with the FAQ Generator for AI Search.
Long-tail keywords and local SEO
For a business that serves customers in person, the most valuable long-tail keywords are usually local: a service plus a city or area, such as “emergency dentist in Clifton” or “AC repair DHA Lahore”. Enter every city and neighbourhood you serve as a location to build the full list. Then decide carefully which ones deserve their own page. A location page needs real local detail, such as address, area served, local reviews and directions, or it becomes a thin doorway page. Our local SEO tools help with the rest of the local picture.
Limits to know about
The expander uses fixed modifier patterns, so some ideas will not suit your topic and many will have little or no search volume. It does not know what people actually search, what ranks or which ideas are seasonal. Grammar checks handle common plurals and modifiers, but unusual seeds may still produce an awkward phrase now and then. Treat the output as a long list of candidates to check, not a list of keywords to target.
Questions about the Long-Tail Keyword Expander
What is an example of a long-tail keyword?
“Teeth whitening cost in Karachi” is a long-tail version of “teeth whitening”. It is more specific, it has a clear price-checking intent and it is usually easier to rank for than the broad term.
How many words is a long-tail keyword?
There is no fixed rule, but long-tail keywords are usually three words or more. What matters most is that the phrase is specific and has a clear intent, not the exact word count.
Are long-tail keywords easier to rank for?
Usually, yes. Fewer sites target each specific phrase, and the pages that do are often less strong than those competing for broad terms. Check the search results for each keyword to be sure.
Does this tool show search volume?
No. It builds ideas from patterns. Paste the ideas into a keyword tool or Google Keyword Planner to check demand before you plan pages.
Can I expand keywords for several cities at once?
Yes. Enter up to 100 locations, one per line, and each seed is expanded with each location. With Local turned on, every seed gets five location phrases per city.
Does the tool store my keywords?
No. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to my server or saved.
