Keyword difficulty is an estimate of how hard it would be to reach the first page of Google for a keyword, usually shown as a score from 0 to 100. The free Keyword Difficulty Estimator scores up to 10,000 keywords at once from transparent signals: search volume, keyword length, intent, competitive niches and specificity. Add the authority of the top-ranking sites from your own SEO tool and it uses that as the main input. It shows how every score was worked out, ranks keywords by opportunity, and tells you which are within reach of your site.

Key takeaways

  • No difficulty score is a measurement of the truth. Paid tools build theirs mainly from backlinks, and different tools often give the same keyword very different scores.
  • This tool is honest about its method: it uses keyword signals by default and says so, and it switches to your SERP data when you add it.
  • Difficulty only matters next to value. The opportunity ranking weighs volume against difficulty so you see the best targets first.
  • Always look at the pages that rank before you commit to a keyword. The tool gives you a link to the results for every keyword.

What makes a keyword difficult?

A keyword is hard when the pages already ranking for it are strong and the searchers are valuable enough that many sites compete. Strength usually comes from links and authority, from content that fully answers the query, and from brand trust. Value comes from commercial intent: insurance, loans, legal services and SEO services attract heavy investment because each customer is worth a lot. Broad one-word terms are also hard because every large site in the space targets them.

Specific long-tail keywords are easier for the opposite reasons. Fewer sites build a page for “local seo for dentists” than for “seo”, and the pages that exist are often weaker. That is why most new and small sites should start with specific keywords, as our guide to long-tail keywords explains.

How the estimate is worked out

FactorWeightHow it raises or lowers difficulty
Search volume30%On a log scale: 100 searches a month adds a little, 10,000 adds a lot. Skipped if you give no volume.
Keyword length25%One or two words are broad head terms; four or more words are long-tail and usually easier.
Intent20%Commercial words such as best, price, services and software raise it; questions lower it; local terms sit in between, because map results depend on proximity.
Competitive niche15%High-value niches such as insurance, loans, legal, crypto, hosting and SEO services raise it.
Specificity10%Narrowing by audience, year, number or format, such as “for dentists” or “checklist”, lowers it.
Your SERP dataMain input when addedAverage authority of the top 10 results (65%, or 50% with referring domains at 25%), blended with the keyword signals.

Scores fall into five bands: 0 to 20 very easy, 21 to 40 easy, 41 to 60 medium, 61 to 80 hard and 81 to 100 very hard. The full breakdown for any keyword is one click away.

How to use the Keyword Difficulty Estimator

  1. Paste your keywords, one per line, with search volume after a comma. A CSV from any keyword tool or Search Console works too; columns named Keyword, Volume or Impressions are read automatically.
  2. For a better estimate, add a serp_authority column with the average Domain Rating or Domain Authority of the top 10 results, and a referring_domains column if you have it.
  3. Optionally enter your own site’s authority from 0 to 100 to see which keywords are within reach.
  4. Press Estimate difficulty. Sort by best opportunity, easiest, hardest or highest volume.
  5. Choose a keyword under “How a score was worked out” to see every factor, then click See results to check the live search results.
  6. Download the CSV for your keyword plan.

Example output

The first example scores ten keywords using keyword signals only. “seo services” scores 86, very hard, because it is a two-word commercial term with high volume in a competitive niche. “car insurance quotes” scores 83, “seo” 76 and “seo tools” 72. At the other end, “local seo for dentists” scores 34 and “how to do keyword research for a new blog” scores 35, both easy, because they are long, specific and lower volume. “what is anchor text” sits at 44, medium.

The second example adds SERP authority data and a site authority of 30. “best seo company in karachi” drops to 35 and is marked within reach, because the sites ranking for it average an authority of only 24. “how to do keyword research for a new blog” rises to 48 and is out of reach for now, because the pages ranking for it average 55. That is why real SERP data matters: the keyword looked easy from its words alone.

Using difficulty to choose keywords

  1. Start with opportunity, not difficulty. A very easy keyword nobody searches is worth little. Sort by opportunity to see keywords with good volume and lower difficulty first.
  2. Match difficulty to your site. Enter your authority and focus on keywords within reach or a stretch. Build towards harder ones as your site grows.
  3. Check the results page. If the top results are forums, thin pages or old articles, a keyword may be easier than any score says. If they are all major brands, it may be harder.
  4. Look for quick wins you already rank for. Keywords where you sit in positions 8 to 20 are often the fastest wins. Our guide to striking-distance keywords shows how to find them in Search Console.
  5. Plan clusters. Win easy, specific keywords first and link them to a pillar page; that builds the topical authority that helps the harder head terms later. The Topic Cluster Planner builds the plan.

Where to get SERP authority data

Most SEO tools show the authority of the pages ranking for a keyword in their SERP overview, under names such as Domain Rating, Domain Authority or Authority Score. Average the top 10 and paste the number as serp_authority. Different tools use different scales, so use one tool consistently, and enter your own site’s authority from the same tool. If you have no paid tool, you can still judge each keyword by hand: open the results, note whether the top pages belong to large brands or small sites, and how well they answer the query. Our guide to competitor analysis in SEO covers what to look for.

Limits to know about

Without SERP data, the estimate is built from the words in the keyword and its volume. It cannot see who ranks, how strong their pages are, or whether the results are full of maps, videos or AI Overviews that change how clickable the organic results are. The niche list covers common high-competition markets but not every one. Treat the score as a way to sort a long list quickly, then judge your shortlist from the live results.

Questions about the Keyword Difficulty Estimator

What is a good keyword difficulty score?

For a new or small site, keywords scoring under 40 are usually realistic targets. Established sites with strong authority can target medium and hard keywords. What counts as good depends on your own site’s strength.

How accurate is keyword difficulty?

Every difficulty score is an estimate. Paid tools base theirs mainly on backlinks and often disagree with each other. This tool is most reliable when you add SERP authority data from your own SEO tool.

Is this the same as Ahrefs or Semrush keyword difficulty?

No. Those tools measure the backlinks of the ranking pages. This tool uses keyword signals by default and your own SERP data when you add it, and it shows exactly how each score was calculated.

Why is a long keyword scored as easier?

Longer keywords are more specific, so fewer sites target them and the competing pages are often weaker. That is a reliable pattern, though the live results can always prove an exception.

What does “within reach” mean?

When you enter your site authority, the tool compares it with the ranking sites’ authority, or with the estimate. Within reach means a gap of 5 points or less, a stretch is up to 20, and anything more is out of reach for now.

Does the tool store my keywords?

No. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you paste or upload is sent to my server or saved.

If you would like a prioritised keyword plan built around what your site can win, my SEO audit service includes keyword research and competitor analysis, and you can ask for a free audit through the contact page. You can also browse the other free keyword research tools.
