Hotel SEO services exist to win back the direct bookings that currently go through online travel agencies at a commission. I work with independent hotels, boutique properties, resorts, guest houses and small hotel groups to make the official website the clearest, fastest and most complete result for the hotel’s own name and for the searches where it genuinely qualifies.
How guests search before they book
A hotel booking usually involves several searches over days or weeks. Each stage needs a different page on your site:
| Stage | Example searches | Page that should answer it |
|---|---|---|
| Destination and need | “hotel near Karachi airport”, “family resort in Murree”, “boutique hotel Edinburgh old town”, “beach resort with private pool Maldives” | Location page and room or facility pages that match the need |
| Occasion | “wedding venue hotel Lahore”, “conference hotel with 200 seat hall”, “honeymoon suite”, “Eid stay offer” | Weddings, meetings and offers pages |
| Brand check | “[hotel name]”, “[hotel name] reviews”, “[hotel name] breakfast timing”, “[hotel name] parking” | Homepage, FAQ, Google Business Profile |
| Booking | “[hotel name] booking”, “[hotel name] official site”, “[hotel name] promo code” | Homepage with a clear official booking route and best-rate message |
The brand check stage is where most hotels lose money. Someone types your hotel’s name and sees Booking.com, Expedia, Agoda or Tripadvisor beside or above your own site. Some of that is unavoidable, because those platforms are huge and Google shows them deliberately. But technical weaknesses on your own site make it worse.
Your site versus the OTA listing for your own name
The things that make an OTA’s job easier are usually under your control:
- A homepage that is slow on a phone because of a full-screen video or an uncompressed photo gallery.
- Nothing on the site that clearly says it is the official website, with a direct booking benefit stated in plain words.
- A Google Business Profile that links to a booking engine URL with parameters, rather than to your homepage.
- Room details, bed types and amenities that exist only inside a booking widget, so search engines see an empty page.
- Phone numbers and addresses that differ between the website, the profile and the booking engine.
SEO cannot remove travel agencies from the results. It can make your own site the result that answers the guest’s question best, which is often enough to move a share of bookings direct.
Google’s hotel price results
The price boxes Google shows for hotels come from Google’s hotel feeds and connectivity partners, often through your booking engine or channel manager. That is a separate setup from SEO and I do not pretend otherwise. Google does offer free booking links for hotels that connect, and I will tell you whether your provider supports it, but on-page work alone will not put your rates there.
Booking engines, calendars and crawl waste
An independent hotel usually has fewer than a hundred pages that really matter: home, rooms and suites, dining, spa, meetings and weddings, offers, location and contact. Yet when I look at crawl data, search engines are often spending their time elsewhere:
- Booking engine URLs with check-in dates, guest counts and promo codes in the query string. Every combination becomes a new URL, often on a subdomain or third-party domain you do not fully control.
- Availability calendars that generate a page for every month, years into the future.
- Photo galleries where each image opens its own thin attachment page, a common WordPress side effect.
- Expired packages left live, so a Valentine’s or Eid offer from several years ago competes with this year’s version.
- Language versions from a translation plugin with no hreflang, or hreflang pointing at the wrong room page.
The fixes: keep booking URLs out of sitemaps and canonicalise them to the clean room page, block pure availability paths where your engine allows, use one evergreen offers URL updated each season, and set hreflang with return links and an x-default. Booking engines belong to your provider, such as SiteMinder, Cloudbeds or Mews, so I write precise change requests for their support team. This is the core of my technical SEO services, applied to hotel systems.
If you are changing booking engine or rebuilding the website, bring me in before launch. Engine swaps and redesigns are one of the most common points where hotels lose indexed room pages through missing redirects.
Pages that win direct bookings
- Room and suite pages with size, bed type, view, occupancy, accessibility features and real photos in the HTML, with the live rate widget alongside rather than instead.
- A location page that answers how far you are from the airport, the station, the beach, the business district or the shrine, with travel times and transfer options. “Hotel near [landmark]” searches are where small hotels most often beat chains.
- Dining pages. If your restaurant takes outside guests, give it its own page with an HTML menu and Restaurant markup. It can rank for dining searches the room pages never will.
- Weddings, events and meetings pages with hall capacities, layouts, catering options and an enquiry form. In Pakistan, wedding and event searches are a major source of revenue for city hotels.
- An offers page at a stable URL, updated for each season.
- A guest FAQ covering check-in times, parking, breakfast, pets, children, and ID requirements. Brand check searches often ask exactly these questions.
Google Business Profile, reviews and the map
For hotels, the map listing shows class, amenities, reviews, photos and often prices. I make sure the category is right (“Hotel”, “Resort hotel”, “Guest house”, “Bed and breakfast”), amenities are complete and accurate, photos are current and labelled, and the website link goes to your homepage. Reviews on Google and Tripadvisor both influence choice. I set up a post-stay review request and a reply routine, and I keep it within Google’s rules: no incentives for reviews and no review gating.
Star ratings need care. Only state an official star rating where a recognised body has awarded it, such as VisitEngland or the AA in the UK, the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing in Dubai, or the relevant provincial tourism authority in Pakistan. Stating a rating you do not hold is misleading to guests and can conflict with consumer protection law.
Structured data, privacy and multilingual guests
schema.org has a Hotel type (a kind of LodgingBusiness), plus HotelRoom for room types and Offer for packages. I mark up the property with address, coordinates, phone, check-in and check-out times, amenities and price range, always matching what the page and your profile say.
Booking forms collect guest names, contact details and sometimes passport information. If you take bookings from UK or EU guests, the forms and your privacy notice need to meet UK GDPR or GDPR, and payment pages must be handled by a PCI-compliant provider. I check that your forms and notices match what actually happens to the data, and I flag gaps for your own advisers.
Many hotels serve guests who search in other languages: Arabic and German for Gulf and European resorts, English for Pakistani hotels serving overseas Pakistanis. Proper language versions, rather than a machine-translation plugin, are covered by my international SEO services.
What I deliver for hotels
- A crawl of the main site and booking subdomain, compared against what Google has indexed.
- A brand search review: who appears for your name, and why.
- Mobile performance testing on the homepage, room and offer templates, with fixes. See also my website speed optimisation work.
- Page plans and copy for rooms, location, dining, events and offers.
- Hotel, HotelRoom, Restaurant and Offer markup where it fits.
- Google Business Profile clean-up and a review routine.
- A redirect map for any redesign or engine change, and written change requests for your booking engine provider.
- Monthly reporting on direct booking clicks, calls and enquiries from organic search.
I schedule heavier work well ahead of your peak booking window, never in the middle of it. I work remotely from Karachi with hotels in Pakistan, the UAE and the UK; see SEO services in Dubai and the UAE and SEO services in Islamabad for those markets. My case studies show how I report findings.
Frequently asked questions
Can SEO stop Booking.com ranking above us for our own name?
Not completely, because Google chooses to show those platforms. What it can do is make your official site faster, clearer and more complete, which usually improves its position and its click share for brand searches.
Can you fix problems inside our booking engine?
Usually not directly, because the engine belongs to your provider. I identify exactly which engine URLs cause trouble and write precise requests for their support team. Where a provider cannot help, we work around it from the main site.
We run several properties. One website or one per hotel?
Both can work. A single domain with a section per property concentrates authority and is easier to maintain. Separate domains make sense where the hotels have distinct brands. Either way, copied facility descriptions and shared booking paths need sorting out first.
How long until we see more direct bookings?
Crawling and profile fixes often show in Search Console within weeks. Rankings and direct bookings depend on how competitive your destination is, and most hotels see clear movement in 3 to 6 months. I do not promise positions or booking numbers.
Should our hotel restaurant have its own page?
Yes, if it serves outside guests. It can rank for dining searches in your area and bring in local revenue the rooms pages never reach.
