Short answer: The SEO marketing strategies that grow traffic most reliably are: fixing crawling and indexing problems first, improving pages that already rank on page one or two, building content around what your customers actually search, linking related pages together, earning links and mentions through genuinely useful assets, and writing titles that win the click. Measure every change in Search Console and repeat what works.

This guide is for business owners and in-house marketers who already have a website and want more people to find it through search. Instead of a long list of tactics, I have ordered the strategies the way I apply them for clients: the ones that release traffic you are already close to come first, and the slower, compounding work comes after. You will also find a calculator to size your quickest wins and a 90-day plan you can copy.

Why most pages get no search traffic

Ahrefs’ 2023 search traffic study found that 96.55% of pages in its index get no traffic from Google at all. When I audit sites, the reasons are almost always the same four:

  • Nobody searches for the topic, or not in the words the page uses.
  • The page does not match the intent. A sales page targeting a “how to” query, or a blog post targeting a “buy” query.
  • Google cannot find or chooses not to index it: orphan pages, accidental noindex tags, duplicates.
  • Stronger pages already own the query, and this one gives Google no reason to prefer it.

Every strategy below addresses one or more of these. If you are new to the basics, my explainer on what SEO is and how it works sets the scene.

Strategy 1: fix crawling and indexing before anything else

Content and links are wasted on pages Google cannot index. Start in Search Console’s Pages report and look for important URLs marked “Excluded”, “Crawled, currently not indexed” or “Alternate page with proper canonical tag”. Then check:

  • Your XML sitemap lists only live, indexable URLs.
  • robots.txt is not blocking CSS, JavaScript or whole sections by mistake.
  • Redirect chains are collapsed to a single hop.
  • Pages load acceptably on a mid-range phone over mobile data, which matters a lot for audiences in Pakistan and other mobile-first markets.

A technical SEO review catches problems most owners never see, such as faceted URLs creating thousands of near-duplicates.

Strategy 2: improve pages that already almost rank

This is where most quick traffic gains come from. In Search Console, filter the Queries report for average positions between about 5 and 20 with plenty of impressions. These pages already have Google’s attention; small improvements can push them into the positions that get most clicks. My guide to striking distance keywords walks through the filters.

For each page, I ask:

  1. Does the opening answer the query directly, or make the reader scroll?
  2. Are there questions the top three results answer that this page skips?
  3. Are facts, prices, screenshots and dates current?
  4. Do other relevant pages on the site link to it with descriptive anchor text?
  5. Does the title promise exactly what the searcher wants?

Size the opportunity first

Click opportunity calculator

Current clicks per month120
Clicks per month at target CTR320
Extra clicks per month200
Small gain: worth doing only if the page converts very well or the work is quick.
Worth prioritising: put this page on this month’s list.
Big opportunity: start here, and check the title and intent match first.

How to read it: take impressions and CTR from Search Console for the last 28 days. Pick a target CTR you have actually achieved on similar pages at the position you expect to reach, rather than a published average. The result is an estimate, not a forecast.

Strategy 3: build content around real search demand and intent

Write for questions people actually type, in the format Google already rewards for them. Before writing anything, search the query and note what ranks: guides, product pages, comparison lists, local results or videos. That tells you the intent. Then use keyword research to group related phrases so one strong page covers a whole cluster instead of five thin ones competing with each other.

Google’s own guidance on helpful content asks whether your page adds original information, analysis or first-hand experience. That is the bar. A page that summarises what already ranks rarely beats it.

Internal links tell Google which pages matter and how topics relate. Google’s documentation on crawlable links recommends that every page you care about has a link from at least one other page, with anchor text that is descriptive and makes sense on its own. In practice:

  • Create a main page for each core topic and link to it from every related article.
  • Link sideways between closely related articles where it genuinely helps the reader.
  • Fix orphan pages; a crawler such as Screaming Frog will list them.
  • Use varied, descriptive anchors rather than “click here” or the same exact phrase every time.

This is the backbone of topical authority: a site that covers a subject thoroughly and connects it clearly.

Strategy 5: win the click with better titles and snippets

Ranking is only half the job. In my experience two pages at the same position can get very different numbers of clicks, and the title is usually the reason. Look for pages with high impressions and low CTR, then:

  • Lead the title with the searcher’s words, not your brand.
  • Add a specific benefit or detail: a year, a number of steps, a price range, a location.
  • Write a meta description that answers “why this page?” Google may rewrite it, but a good one is often used.
  • Add relevant structured data (FAQ is limited now, but Product, Review, LocalBusiness and Article still help).

Links from relevant, respected sites remain one of the strongest signals of trust. The sustainable ways to earn them are assets people want to reference: original data, free tools and calculators, clear explainers, expert commentary for journalists, and partnerships with suppliers or associations. Buying links breaks Google’s spam policies and the risk is rarely worth it. My guide to off-page SEO step by step covers outreach in detail.

Strategy 7: capture local and AI search visibility

If you serve a city, the map pack often brings more calls than organic listings. Complete your Google Business Profile, choose the most specific primary category and ask every customer for a review; my local SEO services cover the full set-up. For AI features, Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews and AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. What helps in practice is the same work as above: clear answers near the top of the page, specific facts, and a recognisable brand.

Your 90-day SEO traffic plan

WeeksFocusOutput
1 to 2AuditIndexing issues fixed, sitemap cleaned, Search Console and GA4 verified
3 to 5Quick wins10 to 20 striking-distance pages refreshed; titles rewritten on high-impression, low-CTR pages
6 to 8StructureTopic clusters mapped, orphan pages linked, duplicate pages merged
9 to 12New content and linksNew pages for gaps in demand, one linkable asset launched, outreach started

Most sites see clearer movement within three to six months, depending on competition and how much was broken at the start. Nobody can guarantee a position.

Monthly SEO traffic routine

  • Check the Pages report for newly excluded important URLs.
  • Pull queries at positions 5 to 20 and pick five pages to improve.
  • Find high-impression, low-CTR pages and rewrite their titles.
  • Refresh one older article with new facts and examples to fight content decay.
  • Add internal links from new posts to your core pages.
  • Publish one piece that fills a real demand gap.
  • Pitch one link opportunity from a useful asset.
  • Review Google Business Profile insights and reply to reviews.
  • Note any Google updates that month before reacting to ranking swings.
  • Record results so you can repeat what worked.

Ticks are saved in your browser.

Mistakes that hold traffic back

  • Publishing new content every week while older pages decay and compete with each other.
  • Targeting national head terms when the business only serves one city.
  • Scaled AI or template content with nothing original in it.
  • Redesigning or migrating without a redirect map.
  • Measuring success by rankings alone instead of leads and sales.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest SEO strategy to increase traffic?

Improving pages that already rank between about position 5 and 20, and rewriting titles on pages with many impressions but few clicks. These pages already have Google’s attention, so changes show sooner than new content does.

How long does SEO take to increase website traffic?

Technical fixes and title changes can show within weeks once Google recrawls. New content and links usually take three to six months, longer in competitive markets or for new domains.

Is content or backlinks more important?

Both matter, but content comes first. Links point to pages; if those pages do not satisfy searchers, links alone rarely hold rankings. Useful content also makes earning links far easier.

Do I need to do anything special for AI Overviews?

Google says no special optimisation is needed. Pages must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Clear, specific, well-structured content from a trusted site is what tends to be cited.

Should a small business focus on local SEO or content?

If customers visit you or you serve a defined area, start with local SEO: Google Business Profile, reviews and service pages. Add informational content once the local basics are in place.
