Photographers can protect their images and still rank by publishing web-sized versions, adding copyright details in the file data, using light watermarks and blocking hotlinking, while keeping the images crawlable with good file names and alt text. Hiding images from search engines usually costs more bookings than it saves.
Publish web-sized files
Upload images sized for screens, not full-resolution originals. Smaller files load faster and are less useful for theft. Shrink them with my free image resizer and compress with the image compressor and WebP converter.
Add copyright information
Embed your name and copyright notice in the image metadata. Google also supports licence information for images, which can allow a Licensable badge in image results when set up correctly.

Hand it over and get back to running your business.
Use watermarks sensibly
A small, tasteful watermark deters casual reuse. A huge one ruins the image and hurts bookings. Place it where it is hard to crop out without ruining the picture.
Block hotlinking
Hotlinking means other sites display your images straight from your server, using your bandwidth. Hotlink protection in your hosting or CDN settings stops this.
Do not rely on right-click blocking
Disabling right-click is easy to bypass and annoys visitors. It also does nothing about screenshots.
Stay visible in Google Images
Keep images crawlable, give them descriptive names and alt text and surround them with relevant text. See what image SEO is. If you ever want to keep certain files out, the rules are in how to block images with robots.txt.
