Google October 2022 Spam Update (19 October 2022): What Changed and How to Recover

Add saadrazaseo.com as a preferred source on Google

The Google October 2022 spam update was announced around 11am ET on 19 October 2022 and was complete by around 5am ET on 21 October 2022, less than 48 hours later. It was a global, all-language improvement to Google’s automated spam detection, including SpamBrain, and Google did not say which spam types it targeted. If your traffic fell sharply on 19 to 21 October 2022, the question is whether your site breaks one of Google’s spam policies, because that is the only thing this update was designed to act on.

You can find the rest of the timeline in my full list of Google algorithm updates.

What the October 2022 spam update changed

Google described this as an improvement to its automated systems for detecting spam. SpamBrain, Google’s AI-based spam prevention system, was part of it. The update applied globally and in all languages.

What Google did not do was name a target. Some spam updates are specific, such as link spam updates, which deal only with links. This one was general. That means it could have affected any practice covered by Google’s spam policies, for example:

  • cloaking and sneaky redirects
  • doorway pages built to rank for many near-identical queries
  • scraped or auto-generated content with little added value
  • hacked content and injected pages
  • hidden text and keyword stuffing
  • thin affiliate pages with nothing beyond the merchant’s information

I list these as the policy areas a general spam update can touch, not as confirmed targets. Google gave no breakdown.

Timeline

Date and time (ET) What happened
19 October 2022, around 11am Google announces the spam update, estimating a rollout of several days
21 October 2022, around 5am Google confirms the rollout is complete

The speed was the notable part. Google had expected several days and it took under two. A short rollout makes diagnosis easier than usual: any change caused by this update should show up within a very narrow window.

Who was affected

Industry trackers reported limited visible volatility. The intended targets were sites violating Google’s spam policies, and Google named no sites. Most legitimate businesses saw nothing, which fits Google’s general position that sites following its policies do not need to change anything after a spam update.

It also landed in a busy period. The September 2022 core update and product reviews update had finished on 26 September, and the helpful content system had launched in August. If you saw a decline over September and October 2022, it is quite possible this update had nothing to do with it.

How to tell if the October 2022 spam update hit your site

The narrow window works in your favour here. This is how I check.

  1. Look at daily data, not weekly. In the Search Console Performance report, set the range to 5 October to 4 November 2022 and view clicks and impressions by day. A spam demotion tends to look like a cliff, not a slope.
  2. Check where the cliff starts. A drop beginning 19 to 21 October is consistent with this update. A drop that began in mid-September points to the core update instead. A drop that begins weeks later probably has another cause.
  3. Check Manual actions. Open Security and Manual Actions in Search Console. An algorithmic spam demotion shows no manual action. If there is one, that is a separate problem with its own fix.
  4. Check Security issues. Hacked sites often get injected spam pages. Search site:yourdomain.com with terms like casino, pills or loan to spot pages you did not create.
  5. See which pages lost. If the losses sit on a specific section, such as auto-generated location pages or a scraped feed, that section is your suspect.
  6. Rule out the boring causes. Tracking code changes, a site migration, server errors in the Crawl stats report, or robots.txt changes in October 2022.

How to recover from the October 2022 spam update

Recovery from a spam update is different from recovery from a core update. There is a concrete thing to fix, but the timeline is slow.

1. Audit against Google’s spam policies

Read the spam policies page by page and check your site against each one. Be honest about grey areas: a network of near-duplicate city pages, AI or spun content published at volume without editing, or pages that exist only to pass visitors to an affiliate.

2. Remove the violating practice

Problem found Fix
Doorway pages Consolidate into fewer useful pages and redirect the rest
Scraped or auto-generated content Delete it or rewrite it with original value
Hacked spam pages Clean the site, close the vulnerability, return 404 or 410 on injected URLs
Cloaking or sneaky redirects Serve the same content to users and Googlebot
Keyword stuffing or hidden text Rewrite the copy naturally and remove hidden elements

For hacked sites and redirect problems, a technical SEO review is usually the quickest way to find everything, because injected pages are often hidden from normal navigation.

3. Know whether to file a reconsideration request

Only if you have a manual action. Algorithmic demotions from a spam update have no reconsideration process. Filing one when there is no manual action does nothing.

4. Wait, and keep the site clean

Google says improvement may come if its automated systems learn “over a period of months” that the site complies with its policies. That means months, not days. Do not reintroduce the practice to test whether it still works, as that resets the clock.

5. Do not fix what is not broken

If your site follows Google’s policies and your drop does not line up with 19 to 21 October 2022, do not start deleting content in a panic. Check whether the decline fits a core update or a seasonal pattern first.

Is it still relevant today?

Yes, in the sense that SpamBrain and automated spam detection keep improving with each spam update. The October 2022 update itself is history, but the recovery logic still applies to every later spam update: find the policy breach, remove it, check for manual actions, and give it months.
