The Google November 2021 Spam Update was released on 3 November 2021 and completed on 11 November 2021, a rollout of 8 days and 1 hour according to Google’s history. It was a general improvement to Google’s automated spam detection, and while Google did not name its targets, Search Engine Land reported it appeared focused on content spam rather than link spam. Because the November 2021 core update began two weeks later, the first job is to work out which of the two moved your traffic.

This entry is part of my full list of Google algorithm updates.

What the November 2021 Spam Update changed

Google’s announcement used familiar wording: “As part of our regular work to improve results, we’ve released a spam update to our systems”. It said the update “should be fully rolled out within a week”. It took slightly longer, and on completion Google posted: “This update is complete”.

Google did not say which techniques it targeted. That is normal for general spam updates. The one useful hint came from the press: Search Engine Land reported that the update appeared focused on content spam rather than link spam. That is a reported reading, not a Google statement, but it is consistent with the timing. Google had run a dedicated link spam update only a few months earlier, from July to August 2021.

In practical terms, “content spam” covers practices such as scraped or copied content, automatically generated text with little value, spun articles, keyword stuffing, doorway pages and thin affiliate pages. These are the areas I check first for a site that matches the November 2021 dates.

Who was affected

Only sites using the targeted spam tactics were expected to be affected. Industry trackers reported modest effects, and the period overlapped the run-up to the November core update. Google named no specific site types.

The timing also mattered commercially. November is when many retail and affiliate sites expect their biggest traffic of the year, so even a modest update in early November was noticed by shops and deal sites. That makes it especially important not to confuse a seasonal shift, or the core update later that month, with a spam demotion.

How to tell if the November 2021 Spam Update hit your site

The question here is almost always “spam update or core update?”. They are close together but they do not overlap, which gives you a clean test.

  1. Set three windows in Search Console: 20 October to 2 November (before), 3 to 11 November plus a few days after (spam update), and the second half of November onwards (core update, which began about two weeks after the spam update). Look at daily clicks.
  2. Find where the step falls. A drop starting between 3 and 11 November fits the spam update. A drop that starts in the second half of November fits the core update. If you dropped twice, treat them as two separate problems.
  3. Account for seasonality. Compare with November 2020 if you have the data. Retail and deal queries often rise through November, so a flat line can hide a real loss, and a rise can hide a demotion on part of the site.
  4. Look for a content pattern. If the losses cluster on pages produced in bulk, such as auto-generated product descriptions, scraped news, or templated city pages, that matches the reported content-spam focus.
  5. Check Manual actions. An algorithmic spam update leaves nothing there. A manual action is a separate issue with its own process.

How to recover from the November 2021 Spam Update

Recovery follows Google’s general advice for spam updates: find what breaks the spam policies, remove it, and give the automated systems time to see the change. Given the reported content focus, this is the audit I run.

Content problemHow I checkFix
Scraped or copied contentSearch exact sentences from your pages; check whether the text appears on manufacturer or competitor sites firstReplace with original content or remove the pages
Auto-generated or spun textRead a sample of pages produced in bulk; look for awkward phrasing and no real informationRewrite with human input or delete; stop the process that produced them
Doorway pagesLook for many near-identical pages differing only by a town or keywordConsolidate into fewer genuinely useful pages
Thin affiliate pagesPages that only repeat merchant feeds with linksAdd real value or remove
Keyword stuffingRepeated phrases, keyword lists, hidden textRewrite for readers

After the clean-up:

  1. Remove, do not hide. Pages that break the policies should be deleted or noindexed, not just unlinked.
  2. Fix the source. If a plugin, feed import or outsourced writer produced the problem pages, change the process so it does not return.
  3. Wait months, not days. Google says improvement may come if its systems learn “over a period of months” that the site complies with its policies.
  4. No reconsideration request for an algorithmic demotion. That only applies to manual actions.
  5. If you also dropped in the core update, work on overall content quality and helpfulness as a second, separate project.

For online shops, the most common issue I find is thousands of product pages using the manufacturer’s description word for word. My ecommerce SEO work tackles this by prioritising the products that matter and writing original descriptions for them first. On content sites, on-page optimisation usually starts with pruning the bulk-produced pages.

Is it still relevant today?

The update is complete and its effects have been overtaken by later spam and core updates. Its pattern is still common: Google releases a spam update, then a core update a short time later, and site owners blame the wrong one. Content spam has also become a bigger issue since 2021, as automated text is far easier to produce at scale. Google’s spam policies on scaled, low-value content are where to look today, and the same audit approach applies.
