Each language or country version should have a canonical tag pointing to itself, and hreflang should point only to those canonical, indexable addresses. If every version canonicalises to one main page, search engines treat the others as duplicates and may ignore their hreflang tags entirely.
How the two signals differ
A canonical tag tells search engines which address is the preferred one for a piece of content. Hreflang tells them which alternate versions exist for different audiences. They must agree, or the alternates are lost. Read what a canonical tag is for the basics.
The correct setup
- The UK page canonicalises to the UK page.
- The French page canonicalises to the French page.
- Hreflang on each lists all versions, including itself.
- Every listed address returns a 200 and is indexable.

Common conflicts
- Canonical points to a different language version.
- Hreflang points to a redirecting address.
- Hreflang points to a noindex page.
- Canonical and hreflang use different URL variants, such as trailing slash or parameters.
When versions are near duplicates
Two pages in the same language for different countries can look almost identical. Keep separate canonicals anyway and differentiate them with local details such as currency, spelling and contact information.
Check your pages
Inspect the head of each version and test addresses with the redirect checker. Build clean tags with the hreflang generator. For other tag interactions, read noindex vs canonical vs robots.txt.
Frequently asked questions
Can I canonicalise all languages to English?
No. That would tell search engines the other versions are not needed.
What about parameters?
Use the clean address in both signals.
