Google Reviews Update (8 November 2023): What Changed and How to Recover

Add saadrazaseo.com as a preferred source on Google

The Google reviews update of November 2023 started on 8 November 2023 and finished on 7 December 2023, a 29-day rollout. It was the last reviews update Google announced: since then the reviews system has been improved continuously, without dashboard announcements. If you publish reviews, the takeaway is that you can no longer wait for a named update to explain changes, so first-hand evidence in every review has to be the standard.

This entry sits in my full list of Google algorithm updates. Below: the confirmed facts, how to separate it from the core update running at the same time, and how I would strengthen review content.

What the November 2023 reviews update changed

Google’s reviews system aims to reward reviews that offer insightful analysis and original research, written by people who know the topic well, over thin content that summarises a list of products. The November 2023 update refreshed that system, and two things about it stand out.

First, scope. The reviews system covers reviews on any reviewable topic: products, services, businesses, destinations and media such as films, books and games. It works in 11 languages. So a hotel roundup, a SaaS comparison or a restaurant guide is evaluated by the same system as a laptop review.

Second, it was the final announced reviews update. Google said future improvements would happen “at a regular and ongoing pace”, without being posted to the Search Status Dashboard. That changed how review publishers have to monitor performance. There is no longer a dated event to point at.

Google did not change its written guidance on reviews with this update. The standards it had published earlier still applied.

What Google’s reviews guidance asks for

Google’s reviews system documentation lists practices it wants to see in good reviews. The ones I check most often in audits are:

  • Evaluating the product from a user’s perspective and showing you know the topic.
  • Providing evidence such as visuals, audio or links showing your own experience with the product.
  • Sharing quantitative measurements of how something performs in different categories.
  • Explaining what sets a product apart from its competitors, and covering comparable products.
  • Discussing benefits and drawbacks based on your own original research.
  • Identifying the key decision-making factors in that category and how the product performs on them.

None of these is new, but the November 2023 update was the last chance to see a dated refresh of the system that applies them.

Who was affected

As reported by industry observers, review publishers saw movement in mid-November, but the November 2023 core update running at the same time made it hard to say which update caused what. Google named no specific sites.

The types of content the reviews system looks at most closely are affiliate product reviews, “best X” roundups, comparison pages, and review sections on otherwise non-review sites, such as a travel blog with hotel reviews or a software blog ranking tools.

How to tell if the November 2023 reviews update hit your site

The reviews system acts at page level on review content, so isolate those pages before you draw conclusions.

  1. Tag your review pages. Build a list of every review, roundup and comparison URL. In Search Console, filter by URL patterns such as review, best-, -vs- or a review category path.
  2. Compare review pages with the rest. Compare 25 October to 7 November 2023 with 8 to 21 December 2023 for both groups. If review pages fell and other pages held, the reviews update is the likely cause. If everything fell, look at the core update.
  3. Check the start date of the drop. A drop starting between 2 and 7 November predates the reviews update and points to the core update.
  4. Look at what replaced you. For your biggest lost review queries, check whether the new top results show hands-on testing, original photos, measurements, or forum discussions from real users.
  5. Allow for December. Shopping seasonality around Black Friday and December can lift or drop review traffic regardless of updates. Compare with the same weeks in 2022.

How to recover from the November 2023 reviews update

Google’s guidance did not change, so recovery means meeting it properly. In my audits, the gap is usually evidence. Many review pages say the right things but give no proof the writer used the product.

  1. Show first-hand use. Add your own photos, screenshots, videos or measurements. Describe what happened when you used it: setup, problems, how it held up.
  2. Compare properly. Explain how the product compares with alternatives, what it does better and worse, and who should pick which. Google’s guidance specifically mentions comparisons and helping readers decide.
  3. Give pros and cons that are specific. “Good battery life” is weak. “Lasted two working days in my testing with the screen at half brightness” is useful.
  4. Cut or merge thin roundups. A “best 25” list where each item gets two lines of manufacturer copy rarely survives. Fewer products, actually tested, beats more products summarised.
  5. Make authorship clear. Say who tested it and why they are qualified. Keep affiliate disclosures honest and visible.
  6. Monitor continuously. With no more announced reviews updates, set up a monthly Search Console comparison for your review page group so you notice changes early.
Weak review pattern Stronger replacement
Specs copied from the manufacturer Your own measurements and observations
Stock product images Original photos of the product in use
Generic pros and cons Specific strengths and weaknesses from testing
Long list with no ranking logic Clear criteria and a recommendation per use case
No named author Named tester with relevant background

For shops that publish buying guides alongside product pages, this overlaps with ecommerce SEO, where guides and category pages need to support each other rather than compete.

Is it still relevant today?

Very much, because it changed how the reviews system is maintained. Since this update, reviews refreshes happen without announcements, so a review-page drop at any time could reflect reviews system changes. The documented standards are the same ones that applied in November 2023: insightful analysis, original research, evidence of use and helpful comparisons. If you publish reviews, treat those as permanent requirements rather than something to fix after an update.

Frequently asked questions

When was the last Google reviews update?

The November 2023 reviews update, which ran from 8 November to 7 December 2023, was the last one Google announced. Since then, Google says the reviews system is improved at a regular and ongoing pace without announcements.

Does the reviews update only affect product reviews?

No. The reviews system covers products, services, businesses, destinations and media, in 11 languages.

Was the November 2023 reviews update the same as the core update?

No. The November 2023 core update ran from 2 to 28 November 2023. The two overlapped, which made it hard to attribute changes on review sites.

How do I recover review pages that lost rankings?

Add proof of first-hand use (original photos, testing, measurements), proper comparisons, specific pros and cons and clear authorship, and cut thin roundups. Then monitor the pages over the following months.
