Google Product Reviews Update (1 December 2021): What Changed and How to Recover

No pressure and no sales script. Just honest answers.

The Google product reviews update of December 2021 was the second product reviews update. It started on 1 December 2021 and finished on 21 December 2021, about 20 days, and applied to English-language pages. What made this version different was new guidance: Google asked reviewers to show evidence of their own experience with a product, such as visuals or audio, and to link to multiple sellers rather than a single merchant.

This article sits within my full list of Google algorithm updates, which covers each reviews update separately.

What the December 2021 product reviews update changed

Like the first product reviews update in April 2021, this one aimed to reward insightful, first-hand product reviews over thin ones that summarise a list of products without adding much. It applied to English-language pages. The system promotes good reviews rather than directly penalising weak ones, but in practice those two things look the same in your traffic data: if better reviews rise, thin reviews fall.

The difference from April 2021 was two new pieces of best-practice guidance:

  • Evidence of hands-on experience. Google asked reviewers to provide “visuals, audio, or other links of your own experience with the product” to support their expertise and show the review is genuine. In plain terms: your own photos, video of the product in use, sound samples for audio gear, screenshots of software settings, or measured test results.
  • Links to multiple sellers. Google added: “Include links to multiple sellers” to give readers the option to buy from the merchant of their choice. This was aimed squarely at review pages that only ever linked to one retailer’s affiliate programme.

Neither of these is a mechanical rule. Adding a second shop link to a weak review will not make it a strong one. They are signs of what a genuinely useful review tends to include, and Google’s systems try to recognise the overall quality those signs point to.

Who was affected

Review and affiliate sites again saw significant movement, according to industry reports. That covers dedicated review publishers, “best X for Y” listicle sites, comparison sites and the review sections of larger publishers. Because the rollout overlapped the end of the local update and followed the core update closely, many site owners saw effects from more than one update in the same weeks, which makes clean attribution difficult.

Sites not publishing product reviews, such as local service businesses or B2B sites without buying guides, were unlikely to be directly affected by this particular update.

How to tell if the December 2021 product reviews update hit your site

The diagnosis for a reviews update is narrower than for a core update, because it only applies to one kind of content.

  1. Segment your review content. In Search Console, filter pages using your URL patterns for reviews, “best” lists and comparisons (for example URLs containing /review/, /best-, or -vs-). If you have no clean pattern, export pages and tag them.
  2. Compare the right windows. Use the two weeks before 1 December 2021 against the two weeks after 21 December 2021. Be careful: late December is a strong shopping period followed by a sharp post-Christmas dip, so compare with the same period a year earlier too.
  3. Check whether only review pages moved. If reviews fell while your other content held, the reviews update is the likely cause. If everything fell between 17 and 30 November, it is more likely the core update.
  4. Look at the winners. For your biggest losing review queries, open the pages now ranking above you. Do they have original photos, test data, or links to several shops? That comparison is usually more useful than any tool score.
  5. Rule out affiliate link or tracking changes. Revenue drops on affiliate sites sometimes come from programme changes, cookie issues or broken links, not rankings.

How to recover from the December 2021 product reviews update

Recovery for this version is about filling exactly the gaps the new guidance pointed at. Here is the checklist I use on review pages:

  1. Prove you used the product. Replace stock and manufacturer images with your own photos showing the product in real use. Add short video, audio samples or screenshots where they help the reader decide. If you cannot get hands-on with a product, consider whether you should be reviewing it at all.
  2. Add measurable findings. Battery life you recorded, noise levels, set-up time, how it held up after weeks of use. Numbers you measured carry more weight than numbers copied from a spec sheet.
  3. Link to more than one seller where it makes sense. Give readers a choice of retailers. This is a reader benefit first; do not add sellers you would not recommend.
  4. Explain what sets the product apart. Say who it suits, who should skip it, and how it compares with the obvious alternatives.
  5. Prune or merge thin reviews. A review you wrote from the product page without using the product will struggle. Either improve it with real testing or remove it.
  6. Wait for the next reviews update. Reviews content is typically re-evaluated when the next reviews update runs, so improvements may not show until then.
Weak review patternWhat the December 2021 guidance suggests
Stock product photos onlyYour own photos, video or audio of the product in use
One “Buy on [retailer]” buttonLinks to multiple sellers so readers can choose
Specs copied from the manufacturerYour test results and what they mean for the buyer
Every product described as greatClear differences, drawbacks and who each product suits

Review pages are often also image-heavy, so after adding original media check that it is compressed and lazy-loaded; my website speed optimisation work covers this. For structure and on-page elements such as headings, comparison tables and review markup, see my on-page optimisation services.

Is it still relevant today?

The December 2021 version was followed by several more reviews updates, and Google later broadened the reviews system beyond just products. The two pieces of guidance introduced here, showing evidence of first-hand experience and linking to multiple sellers, have remained part of Google’s advice on writing high-quality reviews. If you publish reviews today, these are still among the first things I check.

Frequently asked questions

When did the December 2021 product reviews update finish?

It finished on 21 December 2021, after starting on 1 December 2021, roughly a 20-day rollout.

What was new in the December 2021 product reviews update?

Google added guidance asking reviewers to share visuals, audio or other evidence of their own experience with the product, and to include links to multiple sellers so readers can choose where to buy.

Does linking to only Amazon hurt my reviews?

Google did not say single-seller links are penalised. It recommended multiple sellers as a best practice for readers. It is one signal of a review written for the reader rather than for one commission.

Did the December 2021 update apply to non-English reviews?

No. It applied to English-language pages.
