An SEO slug generator converts a page title into the readable last part of a URL. The free SEO Slug Generator turns a title into a short, clean slug without stop words or special characters, so you can paste it straight into your CMS. It runs in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded or stored.

Google’s Google Search Central URL structure guidance recommends readable words rather than long ID numbers, hyphens rather than underscores, and treats /APPLE and /apple as different URLs, which is the reasoning behind a clean lowercase slug.

How to use the SEO Slug Generator

  1. Paste or type the page title.
  2. Read the slug the tool produces.
  3. Shorten it further by hand if it still feels long.
  4. Copy the slug into the permalink or URL field of your CMS.
  5. Publish, and avoid changing it later unless you set up a redirect.

Set the slug when you first create the page. Changing it after the page is live creates a new URL.

How to read the results

The generated slug should look like a short phrase made of lowercase words joined by hyphens. Check it against this list.

  • Lowercase only: avoids two versions of the same address.
  • Hyphens between words: easier for people and search engines to read than underscores.
  • No special characters: punctuation, symbols and accents are removed so the address stays clean.
  • No stop words: filler words such as “the” and “of” are dropped to keep it short.

Good: on-page-seo-checklist. Poor: The_Complete_Guide_To_On-Page_SEO!!. The first is short and clear, the second is long and noisy.

What to check before you publish

  • Does it still make sense? Dropping stop words can leave an odd phrase. Edit it so a reader can tell what the page is about.
  • Is the main topic in it? Include the key words of the page, without repeating them.
  • Is it unique? Two pages with the same slug in the same folder will clash.
  • Will the URL need to change later? If you must rename a live page, redirect the old address to the new one. You can trace the result with a redirect checker.
  • Dates and numbers: avoid putting a year in a slug on a page you plan to keep updating.

Worked example (illustrative)

Imagine a post titled “The 10 Best Ways to Improve Your Website’s Loading Speed in 2026!” A raw conversion would give a very long address that includes the number, the year and several filler words.

A clean slug for it could be improve-website-loading-speed. It keeps the topic, drops the stop words and special characters, and will not look outdated next year. The generator does the mechanical part, and you decide whether to trim it further. This is only an example, so adapt it to your own page.

Why it matters for SEO

The slug is part of the address people see in search results, in the browser and in a shared link. A readable one tells a visitor what to expect before they click, and it is easier to copy, remember and spot as a duplicate. Google’s guidance favours readable words over ID numbers, so descriptive slugs also fit what search engines recommend. A messy URL does not stop a page ranking, but a clean one removes avoidable friction.

Limits of a slug

A slug is a small signal. It helps people understand the link and gives context, but a good slug will not rescue a weak page, and changing an existing slug does not improve rankings by itself. The tool also works only from the text you give it. Non-English titles may need manual editing, and no tool can know your site structure, so check the slug fits the folders and categories you use.

A quick rule of thumb: if you could say the slug aloud and a colleague would know what the page covers, it is doing its job. If it needs explaining, shorten it or rename it.

Keep the structure of your folders in mind as well. A slug such as services/seo-audit already carries the category, so the last part does not need to repeat the word services.

Questions about the SEO Slug Generator

How long should a URL slug be?

Short enough to read at a glance. A handful of meaningful words is plenty. There is no official limit, so cut anything that does not help a reader understand the page.

Should I remove stop words from every slug?

Usually yes, because it shortens the address, but not when removing them changes the meaning. Read the result and restore a word if the slug no longer makes sense.

Can I change a slug on a page that is already ranking?

You can, but the old URL stops working unless you redirect it to the new one. Weigh the benefit of a tidier address against the risk and effort. For a page that performs well, leaving it alone is often the safer choice.
