Security Headers and SEO: HSTS, CSP and the Headers Worth Setting

Security headers protect visitors, and some support a clean HTTPS setup, but they are not direct ranking factors. The worthwhile ones are Strict-Transport-Security, X-Content-Type-Options, a referrer policy and a framing rule. The SEO risk is not leaving them out, it is setting a strict policy that blocks your own scripts or images.

The headers worth knowing

  • Strict-Transport-Security: tells browsers to use HTTPS only.
  • X-Content-Type-Options: stops browsers guessing file types.
  • Referrer-Policy: controls how much source information is passed on.
  • Framing controls: limit who can embed your pages.
  • Content-Security-Policy: restricts where scripts and resources may load from.

How they relate to SEO

A secure, stable HTTPS site supports visitor trust and avoids mixed-content problems, covered in HTTPS and mixed content. The headers themselves do not boost rankings.

The risk of going too strict

A tight Content-Security-Policy can block scripts, fonts or images your pages need. If the page breaks for a crawler or visitor, content may not display properly. Test changes carefully before rolling them out.

Be careful with HSTS

Once browsers remember an HTTPS-only rule, you cannot easily go back. Make sure your whole site, including subdomains, is ready before setting a long duration.

How to check yours

Enter a page into my HTTP header checker to see which security headers are present, and test redirects with the redirect checker.
