What Does an On-Page SEO Score Really Mean and How Much Should You Trust It?

An on-page SEO score is a tool’s own summary of how many checks a page passes, such as title, headings, meta description and image alt text. Google does not use that score. Treat it as a to-do list, not a verdict, and fix problems in order of impact instead of chasing a perfect number.

What the score is

Each tool defines its own checks and weights. A page that scores 90 in one tool may score 70 in another. The number reflects the tool’s rules, not how a search engine ranks the page.

What matters most

  1. Indexability: noindex, canonical and blocked pages decide whether the page can rank at all.
  2. Search intent and content: does the page answer what searchers want?
  3. Title and heading clarity: do they describe the topic accurately?
  4. Supporting details: alt text, links and meta description.

Checks that are often over-weighted

  • Exact keyword counts in headings.
  • Rigid word count targets.
  • Tiny differences in title length.

How to use a checker well

Run a page through my free On-Page SEO Checker, read the findings and ask whether each would help a real visitor or a search engine. Fix technical blockers first. For the full method, read on-page SEO step by step.

Do not ignore the page itself

A perfect score on a page that does not satisfy the reader will not rank. Look at the content with fresh eyes, using what thin content is as a check.

Frequently asked questions

Is 100 out of 100 realistic?

Possible, but not necessary. Aim to fix meaningful problems.

Why do different tools disagree?

They use different checks and weights.
