Local Citations: What They Are and How to Build Them Correctly

A citation is any place your business’s NAP details appear online, whether or not it links back to your site. Search engines use citation volume and consistency as a trust signal, but not all citations are equal.

Tiers of Citations

  • Core/general directories — the small set of major platforms almost every business should be listed on.
  • Industry-specific directories — listings relevant to your specific sector (legal directories for law firms, medical directories for clinics, etc.), which tend to carry more relevance weight than general listings.
  • Local/regional directories — chambers of commerce, local business associations, and city-specific listing sites.

Prioritization

Don’t chase citation count for its own sake. A handful of relevant, accurate, industry-specific listings outperforms fifty generic, low-authority directory submissions — this is one of the more common inefficiencies we clean up in local SEO audits.
