Framer SEO: How to Optimise a Framer Website

Add saadrazaseo.com as a preferred source on Google

Takes about a minute. You hear back from me personally.

To optimise a Framer website, set unique titles and descriptions per page and CMS item, keep clean URLs, add redirects when paths change, publish structured data as JSON-LD, and protect speed by controlling images, fonts and animation. Framer generates a sitemap and robots.txt for you, so your effort goes into content, structure and performance.

The 2024 Web Almanac performance chapter found 43% of websites had good Core Web Vitals on mobile once INP replaced FID, down from 48% under the old FID measure, so a visually rich site has no automatic head start on speed.

What Framer handles for you and what it does not

Framer is a design-first site builder, and its appeal is obvious: you design visually, publish quickly and skip most of the plumbing. Its own guide to SEO features and tools says sites include a sitemap.xml and robots.txt automatically, lets you add custom titles and descriptions for the whole site or individual pages, and supports metadata for CMS pages.

That covers the mechanical basics. It does not cover the parts that decide whether a page deserves to rank: the search intent behind each page, the headings and copy, internal links, and whether the page loads quickly on a mid-range phone. Those remain your job. When I look at a Framer site, I split the review into five areas: page metadata, structure and URLs, CMS content, structured data and performance. The rest of this guide follows that order.

Page settings: titles, descriptions and social previews

Start with the metadata, because it is the quickest win and the most commonly left at defaults. A designer often publishes a site with the same title across several pages, or with a description copied from the home page. Search engines may rewrite titles and snippets anyway, but unique, accurate ones give them a better starting point and give people a reason to click.

My rules for page-level settings in Framer:

  • One primary topic per page. If you cannot write a clear title without using two unrelated phrases, the page is probably doing two jobs.
  • Put the main phrase early in the title and keep the brand at the end. Aim for titles that read naturally rather than stuffing in variations.
  • Write descriptions for humans. Treat the description as a short pitch for the click, not a keyword list.
  • Set a social image deliberately for pages that will be shared, so link previews look intentional.
  • Use a single H1 per page and make it match the page’s purpose. Visual designers sometimes style headings as large text without using real heading elements, so check the rendered structure rather than trusting the look.

URLs, structure and redirects

Framer generates pages from your canvas structure and from CMS collections, so URL design is mostly a planning decision. Keep paths short, lowercase and readable, and avoid renaming them casually once they are live. Every rename is a potential broken link and a loss of whatever signals that URL had earned.

When you do need to change a path, Framer supports redirects. Its redirects article explains that you enter the old and new paths in the site’s hosting settings, can reorder rules to set priority, and must publish for changes to apply. It describes redirects as permanent, supports wildcard patterns such as /blog/*, and notes one important limit: redirects work for sub-paths within the current domain, so redirecting an entire domain to another has to happen at your domain or hosting provider.

That limit matters in two situations:

  1. Moving from another platform to Framer. Map every old URL that has traffic, links or rankings to its new equivalent before launch. My website migration SEO checklist gives the full process, including how to inventory old URLs.
  2. Changing domain or switching between the www and non-www versions. Handle that at the domain level, then keep the path-level redirects in Framer.

Test redirects after publishing. Request a handful of old URLs and confirm each returns a single redirect to the right destination, not a chain and not the home page. Sending everything to the home page is the common shortcut and it wastes the value of the old pages.

Internal links and navigation on a visual canvas

Design tools make it easy to build a beautiful navigation bar and forget everything else. Search engines follow links they can find in the page’s HTML, so check that important pages are linked from real anchors, not only from interactions that depend on scripts or hover states. Then look at the links inside your body copy. A service page that is reachable only from the menu sends a weaker signal than one that is also referenced from relevant articles, case studies and landing pages.

A simple test: crawl the published site and list pages with no internal links pointing to them, or only one. Those are orphans in waiting. Fix them by linking from the most closely related page, using descriptive anchor text rather than “read more”.

Using the Framer CMS for SEO

Framer’s guide recommends using its built-in CMS, noting it simplifies content management and generates pages for search engines to crawl. For blogs, case studies, resources or location-style pages, the CMS is the right tool, because a template guarantees consistent structure across dozens of pages.

The risk is that templates multiply weaknesses as quickly as they multiply strengths. If a CMS template has a vague heading pattern or thin intro, every item inherits it. Before you publish a collection, check:

Template elementWhat to check
Title and description fieldsEach item has its own, not a repeated default
HeadingsOne H1 pulled from the item title; logical H2s in the body
SlugShort, descriptive, no dates unless needed
Internal linksEach item links to related items and to a parent page
ImagesMeaningful alt text; sensible dimensions
Index and listing pagesNot thin; they explain what the collection contains

If you publish a lot of content, remember Framer is not the only design-led option. How it compares in editing control and structure is covered in my Webflow SEO guide and my Wix SEO guide.

Structured data

Framer’s SEO guide recommends adding structured data in JSON-LD to help search results for content such as articles, events, books and videos. I would add that structured data is only worth deploying where it accurately describes visible content. A local service site might use organisation and local business markup on the relevant pages; a blog might use article markup. Do not mark up content the visitor cannot see, and do not add review markup without genuine reviews on the page.

The practical process is:

  1. Choose the schema types that match the page, using the official schema.org vocabulary.
  2. Add the JSON-LD through the site’s custom code area, per page where possible, rather than one blob for the whole site.
  3. Test with Google’s Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator.
  4. Re-test after template changes, because a design update can break or duplicate markup.

Framer’s guide also mentions data-nosnippet, which can stop Google using page content in snippets and may reduce click-through. Use it only on content you genuinely do not want quoted.

Performance on a design-led platform

Framer sites often look polished because they use large imagery, custom fonts and animation. Those same choices are what slow a page down. I do not assume a platform is fast or slow. I measure the published page and look at LCP, INP and CLS using field data where available, then lab data to find the cause.

Where Framer pages typically lose time:

  • Oversized hero images and video. Use correctly sized assets and avoid autoplaying heavy media above the fold.
  • Too many font weights and families. Each one is another request and another chance of layout shift.
  • Layered animation and effects. They are fine in moderation. A page that needs several seconds before the main content is stable is not.
  • Third-party scripts. Chat widgets, trackers and embeds are added one by one and never reviewed. Audit them every quarter.

Check mobile first. Framer’s visual breakpoints make it easy to design a good desktop layout and leave the phone layout as an afterthought.

When Framer is the right choice, and when to look again

Framer is a good fit for marketing sites, portfolios, landing pages and small content sites where design quality matters and the team wants to edit visually. I would look harder before choosing it for very large catalogues, heavy faceted filtering, complex multilingual setups or sites that need deep custom logic. I have not tested Framer’s limits at scale, and its plans and CMS capacity change, so check the current documentation and pricing before committing a large content programme. For a wider platform decision, my comparison of CMS platforms for SEO sets out the trade-offs.

Whichever platform you choose, a launch checklist protects you. Run through my website launch SEO checklist before you publish and again after go-live. If you outgrow Framer, you may be moving to a CMS like the one in my HubSpot CMS SEO guide or a self-hosted option; plan the redirect map first.

Questions people ask about Framer SEO

Is Framer good for SEO?

Framer provides the technical basics: a generated sitemap and robots.txt, editable titles and descriptions, CMS metadata, redirects and a place for JSON-LD. Whether the site ranks depends on your content, structure, internal links and page speed, which no platform supplies automatically.

Does Framer create a sitemap automatically?

Yes. Framer’s SEO guide states that sites include sitemap.xml and robots.txt automatically. You should still submit the sitemap in Google Search Console and check that it lists the pages you actually want indexed.

Can I set up 301 redirects in Framer?

You can set up redirects for paths within your domain in the site settings, including wildcard rules, and publish to apply them. Redirects across whole domains need to be handled at your domain or hosting provider. Test each important old URL afterwards.

Can Framer handle a large blog or catalogue?

It can host CMS collections, but I cannot give you a safe size limit, because capacity and plan details change. Check Framer’s current documentation for your plan, and test a realistic volume of content before migrating a large site.

Next steps

A Framer site can rank well when the metadata, structure and speed are treated as seriously as the design. If you would like a second opinion before or after launch, my SEO web design and development service covers exactly this, and you can ask for a free audit on my contact page.
