The Google November 2023 core update started on 2 November 2023 and finished on 28 November 2023, a rollout of almost 26 days. Google said it improved a different core system from the one changed in the October 2023 core update, which had ended just two weeks earlier. For most sites the takeaway is the same as any core update: there is no single fix, but a drop that lines up with these dates calls for an honest review of content quality, and the November 2023 reviews update running alongside it needs ruling out.
You can find this alongside every other entry in my full list of Google algorithm updates. This article covers what Google confirmed, how to read your data for a month that had two overlapping updates, and how I approach recovery.

What the November 2023 core update changed
Like every core update, this one was a broad change to Google’s main ranking systems rather than an attack on a specific tactic. The one extra detail Google offered was this: “this month’s core update involves an improvement to a different core system than last month”.
That sentence matters for diagnosis. It means October and November 2023 were not one update in two parts. A site could gain in October and lose in November, or the reverse, because different systems were being adjusted. Google did not say which systems were involved, so anyone claiming to know exactly what changed is guessing.
The update was also the third core update in roughly three months, following August and October 2023. For site owners, that meant very little stable time to measure the effect of changes made after the earlier updates.

Traffic fell off a cliff?

Who was affected
Search Engine Land reported a fast rollout with an immediate large impact, and there were widespread reports of ranking swings from site owners. Google named no sectors or site types. Because the reviews update started six days in, review and affiliate sites in particular had two possible causes for any change from 8 November onwards.
One practical pattern I saw discussed a lot at the time: sites that had already been hit in September or October and had started making changes found it very hard to tell whether November reflected their work, a different system, or both. That is a fair reflection of how messy late 2023 was.
How to tell if the November 2023 core update hit your site
The fast early impact actually helps here: if the core update affected you, the change often shows in the first few days, before the reviews update began.
- Look at 2 to 7 November first. In Search Console’s Performance report, view daily clicks and impressions. A step change in this window, before 8 November, points to the core update rather than the reviews update.
- Compare settled periods. Compare 20 October to 1 November 2023 with 8 to 21 December 2023 (after both updates finished). Be aware that December holiday seasonality can distort this, so check the same weeks in 2022.
- Split by page type. Filter pages for review content (for example URLs containing
/review,best-orvs) and compare them with everything else. If only review pages fell and the drop began after 8 November, read up on the reviews update instead. - Track October separately. Plot August to December on one chart. If you moved in opposite directions in October and November, that fits Google’s statement that different systems were changed.
- Rule out non-update causes. Check tracking, site migrations, and any template or internal linking changes made in November.
How to recover from the November 2023 core update
Google’s position is that there is no specific fix for a core update and that a drop does not necessarily mean a page has a problem. Its advice is to review pages against its self-assessment questions on helpful, reliable, people-first content and make broad, lasting improvements. My process for a November 2023 type drop:
- List the queries you lost, not just the pages. Group them by intent: informational, comparison, transactional, local. Often the losses concentrate on one intent, which tells you what kind of page Google now prefers.
- Study the new winners. For each intent group, compare your page with the pages that gained. Note format (guide, tool, list, forum thread), depth, freshness and who wrote it.
- Fix the intent mismatch first. If searchers want a quick answer and you offer 3,000 words of background, restructure. If they want depth and you offer a summary, expand with real substance.
- Raise the evidence of experience. Add first-hand detail, named authors with relevant background, original images or data, and clear sourcing. This is where E-E-A-T stops being a buzzword.
- Do not chase every swing. With three core updates in three months, reacting page by page to weekly movement wastes effort. Make planned improvements, then measure across the next core update.
| Signal in your data | Likely meaning | Where to focus |
|---|---|---|
| Drop from 2 to 7 November across many page types | Core update | Site-wide content quality and intent match |
| Drop only on review pages after 8 November | Reviews update | First-hand testing and evidence in reviews |
| Gain in October, loss in November | Different systems judged you differently | Compare which pages moved each time |
| Clicks down, positions flat | Not a ranking loss | SERP features, demand, seasonality |
If the review shows the site structure itself is the problem, for example thousands of overlapping tag or location pages, that is technical SEO work as much as writing.
Is it still relevant today?
The update is long complete and many core updates have followed, so it cannot be the cause of a current drop. It is still useful as a reference point. If you are reviewing a long-term traffic chart and see a sharp fall in early November 2023, this is the most likely cause, and anything after 8 November should be checked against the reviews update too. The wider lesson from late 2023 also still applies: when updates arrive close together, judge your changes over a full core update cycle rather than week to week.
Frequently asked questions
When did the November 2023 core update start and end?
It started on 2 November 2023 and finished on 28 November 2023, a rollout of 25 days and 21 hours.
How was the November 2023 core update different from October?
Google said the November update involved “an improvement to a different core system than last month”. It did not say which systems were changed in either update.
Did the November 2023 core update overlap with another update?
Yes. The November 2023 reviews update ran from 8 November to 7 December 2023, so it overlapped most of the core update rollout.
Should I make changes straight after a core update drop?
Make considered improvements, but do not rush into technical tweaks or mass deletions. Google advises broad, sustained quality improvements, and recovery usually shows at a later core update.
