Technical SEO for Manchester businesses tends to fall into two very different jobs. One is the online retailer or digital brand with a large, fast-changing site and a development team; the other is the service business covering Greater Manchester that has built a page for every borough and town and is now wondering why none of them rank. I work on both, remotely from Karachi.
Covering Greater Manchester without building doorway pages
Greater Manchester is made up of ten boroughs (Manchester, Salford, Trafford, Stockport, Tameside, Oldham, Rochdale, Bury, Bolton and Wigan), and inside them are dozens of towns and neighbourhoods people use when they search: Didsbury, Chorlton, Altrincham, Sale, Prestwich, Ancoats and many more. Plumbers, roofers, solicitors, removals firms, cleaners and estate agents all want to appear for searches like “boiler repair Stockport” or “conveyancing solicitor Altrincham”.
The common response is to clone one service page fifty times and swap the town name. Google classes those as doorway pages, and they tend to drag the whole site down, not just the clones. The technical fix has three parts:
- Audit and consolidate. I crawl every location page, compare their text for near-duplication, and check Search Console to see which ones have ever earned impressions. Pages with no unique substance and no traffic are merged or redirected into a stronger regional page.
- Rebuild a smaller set with real substance. The pages that remain are the areas you genuinely serve and have something specific to say about: jobs completed there, response times from your nearest van or office, local housing types, parking or access notes, reviews from customers in that area.
- Connect the structure. Location pages link to the services offered there and back again, with breadcrumbs and LocalBusiness schema that reflects your actual address and service area, consistent with your Google Business Profile.
Worked example: a page outline for a Stockport location page
To show what “real substance” means, here is the outline I would draft with a heating engineer based in south Manchester. Every section relies on information only that business has:
- Title: Boiler Repair and Servicing in Stockport
- Opening: which parts of Stockport you cover (Heaton Moor, Bramhall, Cheadle Hulme and so on) and your typical call-out window from your base.
- Housing stock: the property types you work on most in the area and the problems they bring, written from your own job records.
- Recent jobs: three or four short, real job summaries with the area named and photographs where the customer agreed.
- Accreditation: your Gas Safe registration number and any manufacturer approvals, which a customer can check.
- Reviews: testimonials from Stockport customers, quoted accurately from your review platforms.
- Markup: breadcrumb schema, plus a LocalBusiness reference that matches your Google Business Profile, Checkatrade or Yell listings and website footer.
If a business cannot fill those sections for a town, that town probably does not need its own page yet.
Retail and digital brands: crawl budget, migrations and JavaScript
Manchester is home to a large online retail and digital sector, with agencies and media businesses clustered in places like the Northern Quarter and MediaCityUK in Salford. The technical issues on these sites are about scale:
- Faceted navigation. Size, colour, price and brand filters on fashion and homeware sites can create far more URLs than there are products. I map which filter combinations deserve to be indexable landing pages and keep the rest out of the crawl.
- Replatforming. Moves between Magento, Shopify Plus, Salesforce Commerce Cloud and headless builds are where the biggest traffic losses happen. I build URL mapping, test the staging site and monitor logs and Search Console after launch.
- Headless and JavaScript frameworks. Sites built with React or Vue front ends need server-side rendering or static generation for important pages. I compare the raw HTML with the rendered page to find content, links and canonical tags that only exist after JavaScript runs.
- Log file analysis. For large sites, server logs show where Googlebot actually spends its time, which is often on parameters, old campaign URLs and internal search results instead of products.
Cookie consent, UK GDPR and PECR
UK sites setting non-essential cookies need consent under PECR, and personal data falls under UK GDPR. From a technical SEO point of view I look at how the consent platform is implemented: whether it blocks the main content, how much it adds to load time, whether it causes layout shift as it appears, and whether Google Analytics and Google Ads tags are configured with Consent Mode so measurement is not lost. The legal wording and policy belong with your data protection adviser; my part is making sure the approved setup does not cost you speed or data.
Time zones and how we work together
Karachi is four hours ahead of the UK during British Summer Time and five hours ahead in winter. In practice your morning overlaps with my afternoon, which leaves a comfortable window for calls, and I can pick up overnight crawls and audits so findings are waiting for you at the start of your day. I have no office in Manchester. Quotes and invoices are in pounds sterling.
Location-page clean-ups and migration support both sit within my technical SEO work. Content and Google Business Profile support for British clients is under UK SEO services, and my case studies give a feel for how findings are presented.
Questions Manchester businesses ask
We have around 60 town pages. Should we delete them all?
Not all at once, and not blindly. Some may already earn traffic or links. I sort them into keep and improve, merge, or redirect, based on Search Console data and how much genuine local detail you can supply. Redirecting the weak ones into stronger parent pages usually preserves whatever value they had.
We are moving from Magento to Shopify. When should you get involved?
Ideally before the new site’s URL structure is fixed. Shopify uses set path formats for products and collections, so URL changes are almost unavoidable. Planning the redirect map and checking the staging build early is far cheaper than recovering lost rankings afterwards.
Can you work directly with our in-house developers or agency?
Yes. Most of my UK work is with an existing dev team. I write findings as tickets with affected URLs, cause, fix and acceptance checks, and I join sprint planning or review calls where that helps.
If you are not sure whether your location pages are helping or hurting, I can run a free audit and show you which to keep, merge or rebuild. Get in touch and send me your site.
