Local SEO in Lagos

Remote local SEO for Lagos businesses that want to be found by customers on their side of the city.

For Lagos businesses, local SEO starts with a practical fact: customers will not cross the city for something they can find closer, because traffic decides everything. I work remotely from Karachi with Lagos businesses on the Island and the Mainland to make their Google listing and website show up for the areas they can genuinely serve.

Island or Mainland: choose your ground

A Lagos customer on the Mainland searching for a hair salon, a pharmacy or a mechanic is usually looking for one in Ikeja, Yaba, Surulere or wherever they are, not on Victoria Island or in Lekki. The bridges and the traffic make that a sensible choice, and Google’s map results follow the same logic by favouring nearby businesses. Customers often add the area to their search: “restaurant in Lekki Phase 1”, “car repair Ikeja”, “event hall Surulere”.

So the first decision is where you compete. A clinic in Ikeja GRA is not competing with a clinic in Ikoyi, and it should not try to. I look at where your customers come from, which areas you can reach for deliveries or home visits, and then build your presence around those areas.

Making a Lagos address findable

Many Lagos addresses are descriptive rather than precise, and some streets are missing or misnamed on maps. Delivery riders and customers rely on landmarks, and your listing should too. These are the fixes I start with:

  • Correct the pin. Place it on your actual gate or entrance and check it against the street view where one exists. A pin on the wrong side of an estate means customers phone for directions or give up.
  • Add landmarks. In your profile description and on your contact page, mention the bus stop, junction, bank branch or filling station people use to find you.
  • Use the estate or plaza name. If you are inside an estate or shopping plaza in Lekki or Ikeja, include its name, because customers search it.
  • Write the address one way everywhere. Your website, Google profile, Instagram bio and any directory listings should match, down to “Street” versus “St”.
  • Use a Nigerian phone format with +234. Put the WhatsApp number customers actually message.

WhatsApp and Instagram are part of your local presence

For many Lagos businesses, especially in fashion, beauty, food and events, customers move between Instagram, WhatsApp and Google before they buy. Someone sees your work on Instagram, searches your name on Google to check you are real and see reviews, then sends a WhatsApp message. Every step needs to agree.

That means your business name on Google matches your Instagram handle closely enough to be recognised, your profile links to your website or a proper landing page rather than a dead link, and a WhatsApp button or link is easy to tap on mobile. Tagged links on the profile then show which of those three routes Lagos customers actually use.

Lagos-specific listing problems

Problem Why it happens in Lagos What I do
Listing shows wrong area (e.g. Lagos Island instead of Lekki) Google’s area boundaries do not always match how locals describe places Correct the address and use the area name customers use on your website and in your description
Several profiles for one business Staff or customers created listings over the years Claim the real one, request removal or merging of duplicates
Home address visible for a mobile service Caterers, makeup artists and technicians register from home Switch to a service-area setup with the address hidden
Hours that ignore real conditions Hours are set once and never updated for public holidays Set special hours for holidays and update when things change
Slow, heavy website Sites built with large images and plugins load poorly on mobile data Compress images, cut unnecessary scripts, keep the contact page light

Directories and platforms that make sense in Nigeria

Google Business Profile is the foundation. Beyond that, the useful platforms depend on your trade: Jiji for many product and service sellers, food delivery apps for restaurants, booking or listing sites relevant to hotels and short-let apartments, and Nigerian business directories that are well maintained. I check which ones your competitors appear on and which show up when people search your name, and I focus on those rather than mass submissions to sites nobody visits.

If you sell to customers beyond Lagos or abroad (Nigerians in the UK or the US ordering for family at home, for example), your website needs to say clearly where you deliver and how payment works. That goes beyond the map listing, and I cover it as part of the website work.

How we work together

My base is Karachi; there is no office or team in Nigeria. Lagos is on West Africa Time, four hours behind Pakistan with no daylight saving changes, so a call in your morning falls in my early afternoon. We can handle most things over WhatsApp, and you get a written summary each month. You or your team take the on-site photos and any verification video Google asks for, and I tell you exactly what to capture. My wider local SEO service is explained on its own page, and examples of project reporting are in the case studies.

Questions Lagos business owners ask

My shop is on the Mainland. Will Island customers ever see it?

On the map, it is difficult, because distance counts and the Island has its own competitors. If you deliver to the Island, your website can still rank for searches about delivery there, and your Instagram and WhatsApp channels can carry orders across the city.

I sell mainly on Instagram. Do I still need a Google profile?

Yes. Many customers search your business name on Google before paying someone they found on social media. A verified profile with reviews and a real location or service area is one of the strongest signals that you are a genuine business.

My Google profile keeps getting suspended. Why?

The usual causes are a business name with extra keywords, an address that does not match your real premises, or several profiles for the same business. I check each against Google’s guidelines and fix the cause before asking for reinstatement.

If you run a business in Lagos and want to see how you show up for customers in your part of the city, message me about a free audit. I will look at your pin, your listing and how well it connects to your Instagram and WhatsApp.
