The Google Product Reviews Update of April 2021 launched on 8 April 2021 and was declared “effectively done” on 22 April 2021, a rollout of about 14 days. It targeted English-language product review content, rewarding in-depth reviews based on research and hands-on use over thin pages that simply summarise a list of products. If your affiliate or review pages dropped in mid-April 2021, this is the most likely cause, and the fix is better evidence, not more words.
This is one entry in my full list of Google algorithm updates.

What the Product Reviews Update changed
This was the first time Google ran a ranking update aimed specifically at review content. It applied to English-language product reviews only. Google said it was “designed to better reward” reviews that “share in-depth research, rather than thin content that simply summarizes a bunch of products”.
The type of page it had in mind is familiar to anyone who has searched “best air fryer” or “best running shoes for flat feet”: ten products, each with a stock photo, a paragraph rewritten from the manufacturer’s listing, a pros and cons box that could apply to any product, and a “check price” button. Nothing on the page shows that anyone has touched the product.
Alongside the update, Google published a set of questions for review writers. In summary, they asked whether a review:
- shows expert knowledge of the products;
- shows what the product is like physically and how it is used, with content beyond what the manufacturer provides;
- gives quantitative measurements of performance;
- explains what sets the product apart from competitors;
- covers comparable products, or explains which product is best for which use;
- discusses benefits and drawbacks based on research;
- describes how a product has changed from earlier models;
- identifies the key decision-making factors in the category and how the product performs on them.
It was a standalone update, separate from core updates. It was also the first in a series of product reviews updates that continued until the reviews system became continuous in late 2023.
Timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 8 April 2021 | Google announced and launched the update, with guidance questions for review content. |
| 8 to 22 April 2021 | Gradual rollout. Ranking movement reported across affiliate and review niches. |
| 22 April 2021 | Danny Sullivan said the rollout was “effectively done”. |
| Later 2021 to 2023 | Further product reviews updates followed, until the reviews system became continuous in late 2023. |
Who was affected
As reported by the industry, affiliate and product review sites with thin, templated reviews lost ground, while publishers producing in-depth reviews gained. Data firms rated it a big update, but smaller than a typical core update.
Because it was English-only, a site publishing reviews in other languages would not have seen the same effect from this update. Non-review pages on the same site were not the target either, which is useful for diagnosis: if your informational guides held steady while your “best X” pages fell, the pattern fits.
How to tell if the Product Reviews Update hit your site
- In Search Console, compare the two weeks before 8 April 2021 with the two weeks after 22 April 2021. Use the Pages tab, not just the site total.
- Tag your URLs by type: “best X” round-ups, single-product reviews, “X vs Y” comparisons, informational guides, category pages. Sum clicks per group. A product reviews hit shows up as losses concentrated in the review groups.
- Check the Queries tab for terms containing “best”, “review”, “vs”, “top” and “worth it”. These are the intents the update touched.
- Look at who replaced you for those queries. If the winners have original photos, test results or long-term use notes, you know the gap.
- Rule out other causes: affiliate programme changes, out-of-stock products, tracking changes and seasonality (e.g. gift guides after the holidays). There was no confirmed core update inside this window, which helps.
- Check Manual actions in Search Console. A reviews update is algorithmic and will not show there, but it is worth confirming nothing else is going on.
How to recover from the Product Reviews Update
Google’s guidance points to one thing: evidence that the review comes from real research and use. Rewriting the same content in longer sentences does not help. Here is the order I work in on review sites.
- Decide which reviews you can actually stand behind. If you have never used or tested a product, either get hands-on with it, find a contributor who has, or remove it from the page. A shorter list of products you know is better than a long list you do not.
- Add first-hand evidence. Your own photos and short videos, how long you used it, what you used it for, and what went wrong. Describe physical characteristics a buyer cannot get from the spec sheet: weight in the hand, noise, build quality, setup time.
- Add measurements. Where the category allows it, measure things: battery life in your use, heat-up time, noise levels, load times. Explain how you measured.
- Compare. Say how the product stacks up against named alternatives and who should pick which. “Best for small kitchens” with a reason beats a generic winner badge.
- Write real drawbacks. Every product has weaknesses. If your cons box says “a bit pricey” on every product, it reads as filler.
- Cover what changed from earlier models when buyers are likely to be choosing between versions.
- Show who wrote it and why they are qualified. A real author with a relevant background, and an explanation of how you test.
- Consolidate. Several near-identical “best X for Y” pages with the same products in a different order should usually become one strong page.
- Wait for the next refresh. In 2021 to 2023, improvements were generally recognised when the next reviews update ran. Today the reviews system is continuous, so improvements can be picked up over time.
| Thin review pattern | Fix |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer descriptions reworded | Original observations from use, with your own photos |
| Identical pros and cons on every product | Specific benefits and drawbacks tied to how it performed |
| Ten products, no winner logic | Clear “best for” recommendations with reasons and comparisons |
| No author or testing process | Named reviewer, relevant expertise, a short methodology section |
| Dozens of overlapping round-ups | Fewer, stronger pages, merged and redirected |
For online shops that publish reviews of their own stock, the same principles apply. My ecommerce SEO work often includes turning thin buying guides into genuinely useful comparisons, and the on-page optimisation side covers the structure and author signals.
Is it still relevant today?
Very much so. The April 2021 update set the standard Google has applied to reviews ever since. The series of reviews updates that followed widened the scope, and by late 2023 the reviews system became continuous rather than arriving in named updates. The questions Google published in April 2021 remain the best checklist for any page that recommends products. If you run an affiliate site today, assume your review pages are being judged against them all the time, not just on update days.
Frequently asked questions
When was the April 2021 product reviews update?
It launched on 8 April 2021 and Google said it was effectively done on 22 April 2021, about 14 days in total.
Was the product reviews update a core update?
No. It was a standalone update aimed at English-language product review content. Core updates are broader and are announced separately.
Did it affect reviews in languages other than English?
No. Google said the April 2021 update applied to English-language product reviews only.
How do I recover from the product reviews update?
Show first-hand use, add your own measurements and photos, compare products with alternatives, cover real drawbacks and add information beyond the manufacturer’s specs. Then give the reviews system time to reassess the pages.
Does the product reviews update affect service reviews?
The April 2021 update was about product reviews. Google’s later guidance widened the reviews system over time, but this specific update was product-focused.
