Free Social Share Preview

A social share preview shows how a link will look when someone posts it on social media. The free Social Share Preview fetches your URL and shows how it appears on Facebook, LinkedIn, X and WhatsApp, based on its Open Graph tags, so you can fix a poor title, description or image before the link goes out.

Appearance matters to trust: in the Stanford web credibility study, 2,684 people judged the credibility of live websites and the design look of the site was the most frequently mentioned factor, appearing in 46.1% of comments.

How to use the Social Share Preview

  1. Enter the full public URL of the page you want to share.
  2. Run the preview.
  3. Look at each platform’s version: Facebook, LinkedIn, X and WhatsApp.
  4. Check the title, description and image on each card.
  5. Fix any weak or missing tags on the page, then run the preview again.

Check a page before a launch, a newsletter or a campaign, because a poor card is easy to miss until the link is live.

How to read the results

The preview is built from the Open Graph tags on the page. Each card is made of a few parts.

A good result is a clear title, a relevant image that is not awkwardly cropped, and a description that adds to the title. A bad one is a blank card, a generic site name, or an image that has nothing to do with the page.

Common problems this finds

To write the tags, use the Meta Tag Generator.

Worked example (illustrative)

Imagine a business posts a link to a new blog article in a WhatsApp group. The card shows only the bare site name and a grey box where an image should be. Nobody has a reason to tap it. The preview reveals the page has no Open Graph image and a generic site-wide title.

After adding a specific title, a one-line description and a clear image to the page, the preview shows a card that explains the article before anyone opens it. This is an invented scenario to show what to look for, and your results will depend on your own tags.

Why it matters for SEO

Open Graph tags are not a direct ranking factor, so this is not a rankings tool. Its value is in how shared links perform. A link with a clear card is easier to notice and trust, and shares and visits that follow can send people to your site. If your content gets passed around in chats, newsletters and social feeds, the card is part of your marketing, and it takes only a few tags to get right.

Limits to know about

The tool runs on the site’s server, which fetches the public URL you enter. It sees the HTML the server returns, not content added later by JavaScript, and some sites block automated requests. There is a fair-use limit on repeated checks.

The previews are drawn from your tags and are an approximation. Each platform changes its layout from time to time and may cache older versions, so the real card can differ slightly. Pages behind a login cannot be fetched at all.

Questions about the Social Share Preview

Why does the preview show no image for my page?

The page probably has no Open Graph image tag, or the tag points to a file the server cannot reach. Add an image tag with a full, public address and run the preview again.

Do social share tags affect my Google rankings?

They are not a ranking factor in the way a title is. Their job is to control how a shared link looks, which can influence whether people click it and share it further.

Why did the card not change after I updated my tags?

Platforms keep a stored copy of what they last read from your URL. Your tags may be right while an older card is still shown on the platform. Ask the platform to refresh, or wait for it to update.
