Free UTM Link Builder

A UTM link is an ordinary web address with extra parameters added so Google Analytics 4 can tell which campaign, source and medium sent a visit. The free UTM Link Builder adds those parameters for you in your browser, so your campaign links are consistent and your GA4 reports are accurate.

Google’s documentation on UTM parameters in GA4 states that parameter values are case sensitive, so utm_source=google is different from utm_source=Google, and recommends a strict, case-sensitive naming convention, with lowercase as the standard.

How to use the UTM Link Builder

  1. Enter the full address of the page you are promoting, starting with https://.
  2. Fill in the campaign details: where the traffic comes from (the source), the type of channel (the medium) and the campaign name.
  3. Add any extra details only if you will actually use them in reports.
  4. Generate the link and copy it.
  5. Open the link yourself to confirm it loads the right page, then use it in your email, ad, post or printed material.
  6. Record the link in a shared spreadsheet so that nobody invents a new naming style next month.

How to read the results

The finished link is your page address followed by a question mark and parameters joined with ampersands. Read it aloud. A good link tells a story: for example, source “newsletter”, medium “email”, campaign “spring_sale”. If a colleague cannot guess what each value means, simplify it. Remember that the parameters are visible to anyone who sees the link, so do not put private information in them.

Parameter Answers the question Example value
utm_source Where did the visit come from? newsletter
utm_medium What type of channel was it? email
utm_campaign Which campaign or promotion? spring_sale
utm_content Which creative or link variation? header_button

Naming rules that keep reports clean

Common problems this prevents

Without UTM parameters, a share of your campaign traffic is likely to appear as direct visits or get lumped in with other sources, so you cannot tell which email, post or partner link did the work. The opposite problem is inconsistency: three team members tag the same newsletter three different ways and the report shows three sources. A shared builder and a naming list remove both problems. For printed material, create the tracked link here, then turn it into a code with the QR Code Generator. To estimate what the resulting visits might be worth, try the SEO ROI Calculator.

Worked example (illustrative)

Imagine a furniture retailer sending a monthly email and posting the same offer on social media. The email link uses source “newsletter” and medium “email”. The social link uses source “facebook” and medium “social”, with the same campaign name. In GA4 the retailer can now compare the two sources for the same promotion and see which brought more visits and more purchases. Without the tags, both would blur into general traffic.

Limits to keep in mind

The builder only creates links. It does not store them, report on them or connect to your analytics account, so you need GA4 set up properly to see the data. UTM tracking is for links you control, such as email, ads and posts. It is not for ordinary organic search results, and some apps, browsers or privacy settings can strip or hide parameters. Tagged links also make addresses long and untidy when pasted in public, so use them where the destination is not a surprise, or shorten them with care.

Questions about the UTM Link Builder

Do I need UTM parameters for every link?

Only for links you place in campaigns you want to measure, such as email, ads, social posts and partner links. Do not add them to links within your own site.

Why are my campaigns split into several rows in GA4?

Usually because the values differ in small ways, such as capital letters or underscores against hyphens. Google treats them as different values, so use one lowercase naming convention.

Which UTM parameters are essential?

Source, medium and campaign are the core three. Others, such as content, are useful when you test variations, but only add them if you will report on them.
