Google Page Experience Update for Desktop (22 February 2022): What Changed and How to Recover

Google Page Experience Update (Desktop), 22 February 2022 to 3 March 2022: what changed and how to recover

The Google page experience update for desktop extended the page experience ranking signal from mobile to desktop search. It started on 22 February 2022 and Google confirmed it complete on 3 March 2022, a 9-day rollout. The takeaway: desktop pages were now assessed on Core Web Vitals, HTTPS and intrusive interstitials, but the measured ranking impact was small, so content still mattered far more.

What the desktop page experience update changed

Google first rolled out the page experience signal for mobile results in 2021. This update applied the same idea to desktop results. It used the same factors as the mobile version, with one exception: mobile-friendliness was not part of the desktop signal, for the obvious reason that a desktop page does not need to fit a phone screen.

That left these factors for desktop:

Search Console’s Page Experience report gained desktop data at the same time, so site owners could see desktop and mobile separately. This is useful because the two often differ: a site can pass on mobile thanks to a lighter mobile template and fail on desktop because of large hero images, heavy sliders or desktop-only ad slots that shift the layout.

Timeline

Date What happened
4 November 2021 Google announces that page experience will come to desktop, with a timeline.
22 February 2022 Desktop rollout begins.
3 March 2022 Google confirms the rollout is complete.

Who was affected

Industry observers reported minimal measurable ranking impact. That matches how Google had framed page experience from the start: as one signal among many, and a relatively light one compared with relevance. Sites with very poor desktop experience competing against near-equal pages had the most to lose, in theory, but there were few clear reports of large swings attributed to this update.

How to tell if the desktop page experience update hit your site

Because the expected effect was small, the first job is to rule this update out before blaming it.

  1. Segment by device. In the Search Console Performance report, filter to Desktop and compare the two weeks before 22 February 2022 with the two weeks after 3 March 2022. If mobile held and only desktop fell, keep investigating. If both fell, something else is more likely.
  2. Check desktop Core Web Vitals. Open the Core Web Vitals report and select desktop. Note which URL groups were “Poor” or “Needs improvement” before the rollout.
  3. Match the losers to the poor groups. If the pages that lost desktop positions are the same ones in poor URL groups, there may be a link. If the losers have good scores, look elsewhere.
  4. Look for other changes. The March 2022 product reviews update started on 23 March, so a fall from late March is more likely to be that, especially for review content.

How to recover from the desktop page experience update

Fixing page experience is worthwhile for users and conversions regardless of rankings. Keep expectations modest about ranking gains, because Google has been clear that relevant content still outweighs page experience.

  1. Fix poor desktop LCP. Common causes are oversized hero images and sliders, render-blocking CSS and JavaScript, slow server response and web fonts loading late. Serve correctly sized images in modern formats and preload the main image.
  2. Fix layout shift. Set width and height on images and embeds, reserve space for ad slots and cookie banners, and avoid inserting content above what the user is reading.
  3. Review desktop interstitials. Full-screen newsletter pop-ups on entry are a frequent desktop problem. Use smaller banners or delay them; legally required notices such as cookie consent are treated differently.
  4. Confirm HTTPS everywhere. Check for mixed content and old HTTP URLs in internal links and canonicals.
  5. Validate and monitor. Use Search Console’s validation on fixed URL groups. Field data takes about 28 days to reflect changes, so do not expect the report to update the next day.
Desktop problem Typical fix
Large hero image or slider Single optimised image, correct dimensions, preloaded
Ads or banners pushing content down Reserved space with fixed dimensions
Entry pop-up covering the page Smaller or delayed prompt
Heavy theme scripts on every page Remove unused scripts, defer the rest

Is it still relevant today?

Page experience as a concept is still part of how Google talks about ranking, and Core Web Vitals are still measured for desktop and mobile, though the individual metrics have evolved since 2022. The lasting lesson from this update is to check desktop and mobile separately, and to treat page experience as a tie-breaker and a conversion improvement rather than a primary ranking lever.

Frequently asked questions

When did the page experience update roll out on desktop?

It started on 22 February 2022 and was confirmed complete on 3 March 2022.

Was mobile-friendliness part of the desktop page experience update?

No. The desktop signal used the same factors as mobile except mobile-friendliness.

Did the desktop page experience update cause big ranking drops?

Reports suggested minimal measurable impact. If you saw a large drop at that time, another cause is more likely.

Should I still fix desktop Core Web Vitals?

Yes, mainly for users and conversions. Just do not expect better scores alone to beat a competitor with more relevant content.
