The Google December 2022 helpful content update started on 5 December 2022 and finished on 12 January 2023, 38 days against Google’s two-week estimate. It took the helpful content system, which had launched for English only in August 2022, to all languages worldwide and added new signals for spotting content made mainly for search engines. For non-English sites in particular, this was the first time the site-wide helpful content signal could apply to them.

What the December 2022 helpful content update changed
Two things changed.
- Language coverage. The first helpful content update (25 August to 9 September 2022) applied to English-language searches. The December 2022 update expanded the system to all languages globally. A Spanish recipe site, a German software blog or an Urdu news site could now be assessed by the same classifier.
- New signals. Google added new signals to the classifier that detects content created mainly to rank in search engines rather than to help people. Google did not publish what those signals are.
The way the system works did not change. The helpful content classifier produced a site-wide signal: if a site had a relatively high amount of unhelpful content, its other pages could be affected too, not just the weak ones. That is what made it different from page-level ranking systems, and it is why recovery advice for this update focuses on the whole site.
On completion, Google said the improvements were “starting to become more visible”, which suggests even Google saw it as a gradual change.
Timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 25 August to 9 September 2022 | First helpful content update, English only |
| 5 December 2022 | December helpful content update begins, all languages |
| 14 December 2022 | December 2022 link spam update begins and overlaps |
| Late December 2022 | Rollout runs well past the two-week estimate; Danny Sullivan says “rollouts can slow or pause” over holiday periods |
| 12 January 2023 | Google confirms completion of both the helpful content and link spam updates |
Who was affected
Industry observers reported that the impact was gradual and modest compared with what many expected, partly because the rollout stretched across the holidays when search behaviour is unusual anyway. Google named no sites.
The sites with the most to lose were non-English sites that had never been exposed to the classifier before, especially those publishing large volumes of content on topics outside their main purpose, or summarising what other sites already said without adding anything.
How to tell if the December 2022 helpful content update hit your site
This one needs patience, because the slow rollout, the overlapping link spam update and holiday seasonality all blur the picture.
Use year-on-year comparisons
Comparing December with November is misleading for most sites because demand shifts over the holidays. Instead, compare 13 January to 9 February 2023 with the same weeks in early 2022, and compare 7 to 20 November 2022 with the same weeks in 2021. If the year-on-year gap widens sharply after the update, that is meaningful. If it stays similar, the dip was probably seasonal.
Check whether the decline was site-wide
Helpful content losses tend to affect a broad set of pages, including good ones. If only a handful of pages fell, a site-wide classifier is a less likely explanation.
Separate it from the link spam update
If your rankings depended on bought links, the link spam update (from 14 December) is the more likely cause. Check the Links report in Search Console for patterns such as sitewide footer links, guest posts on unrelated sites or obvious paid placements.
Check by language
If you run a multilingual site and only non-English sections fell, that fits this update well, since those sections were newly in scope. Filter by country or by language folder in Search Console.
A worked example: a multilingual site
Take a typical case I see: an English travel or software blog that, during 2022, added Spanish, German and French versions of its articles using machine translation, with no editor for those languages. Before December 2022 the English section had been assessed by the classifier since August, but the translated sections had not. After this update, all of it was in scope. If the translated folders make up most of the site’s URLs and few of them get any engagement, the site-wide signal can reflect that weight of unhelpful pages. The fix is not to tweak the English articles, but to decide whether each language version is something you can genuinely support.
How to recover from the December 2022 helpful content update
Google’s guidance was to remove or improve unhelpful content, and to assess the site using its people-first self-assessment questions. Because the signal was site-wide, the job is a content inventory, not a few page fixes.
- Export every indexable URL with its clicks, impressions and backlinks over the last 12 months.
- Sort them into keep, improve, merge and remove. Pages with no traffic, no links and no clear purpose for your audience are the first candidates for removal or noindex.
- Look hard at translated content. Machine-translated pages published to cover more languages, with no local knowledge or review by a fluent speaker, are a common weakness on multilingual sites. Either review them properly or remove them. My international SEO service covers this kind of language audit.
- Answer Google’s self-assessment questions for your key sections. Would someone who came directly to your site find this useful? Does it show first-hand knowledge? Would the reader leave satisfied, or need to search again?
- Stop publishing for search volume alone. If your editorial plan is built only from keyword tools, add a check: is this topic part of what our site is about and do we know something useful about it?
- Expect months. Google said the classifier re-evaluates sites over time. Recovery was expected to take months as the site-wide signal was reassessed.
| Common pattern on hit sites | What to do |
|---|---|
| Off-topic articles chasing traffic | Remove or move them; keep the site focused |
| Unedited machine translations | Review with a fluent editor, or noindex |
| Summaries of other sites’ content | Add original insight or consolidate |
| Articles padded to a target word count | Cut to what answers the question |
Is it still relevant today?
Not as a standalone system. After one more standalone update in September 2023, Google folded helpful content into its core ranking systems in March 2024. The principles of this update still matter, though, and its main lasting effect was making those principles apply in every language, not just English.
